Hey everyone hope all is well, I just have a quick question does anyone have success on changing an Aqua Clear 50 Impeller to a 70? I currently have an AC50 filter but I just feel like it’s just not moving the water fast enough and currently on a tight budget to upgrade filter. I currently have a 37 gallon tank with just a Raphael catfish at the moment looking to get more fish soon. Thanks for the help!

Yeah that’s what I was worried about if I was to change the impellers I might have to take some filter media out and definitely don’t want to do that, and yes I did saw that on Amazon. I guess I’ll just have to wait till I get enough cash to get a stronger filter. Thanks for the reply I appreciate it!

I would suggest to add a sponge filter driven off an air pump, to supplement your filtration.

Easy, cheap and very effective.

If you haven't ordered a sponge filter yet, may I make some suggestions...

I have had good luck with using ATI brand of sponge filters. They are made in the USA and a few dollars more than the Chinese made ones. Amazon actually has higher prices than other places for some reason. Online, the Jehmco and Ken's Fish sites have the best prices and selections. I buy them and other supplies from the Ken's site. They are also modular in construction, so all the parts fit all models. All of the parts can be purchased seperately, which also differentiates them from other brands. They can be even stacked.

Their normal Hydro Sponge filters use a fine foam sponge. If the word "Pro" is in the description, it uses a coarse foam sponge for higher flow.

They are hard to judge in size by looking at pictures, but I would recommend either getting a pair of Hydro Max II Pro's to put in the back corners, or get a Hydro Sponge II and stack it on top of a Hydro Sponge III Pro. Since they are modular, they can be stacked by adding a "bullseye adapter". The finer foam sponge on top will colonize a ton of beneficial bacteria while the higher flow through the lower coarse sponge catches a ton of muck along with housing the bb. I am always amazed how much muck my sponge filters collect!

The stacked option I gave you is what I have in our 55 gallon Mbuna tank to supplement an Aquaclear 70 and a Hydor canister. Although I have rock work in the tank, my Synodontis Multipunctatus and Petricola catfish always hang out either on, behind or under the sponge filters (unless they are out roaming around the tank).

Our other tanks use ATI filters as well, and their Filter-Max prefilters on the intake tubes of our Aquaclears and canisters.
