Apple snail confusionI

People all tend to say the Golden Apple snail Pomacea canaliculata is the largest fresh water snail.
My father had one a long time ago and I see them in the stores all the time.
Big as they are I have rarely seen them bigger than a pingpongball. I hear they grow as big as a softball

On the other hand I see Peruvian Apples that are massive "softball size" all the time.

What's the deal here on size ? I would expect to see smaller Peruvians and bigger Golden apples.

What you are seeing is the gold Inca Snail and is a type of mystery snail. that does not grow nearly that big. They are all varities of apple snails. They don't as far as I know even sell the huge type because they really damage plants and become a very invasive pest if they get loose in warm water areas. I have heard that they can no longer be shipped over state lines but have never done the research. The mystery snails have a different latin name that begins with P but I can't remember off hand the exact spelling. Alison

Ok those look like what i'm seeing yes. So the big ones I see all the time that must be 3-4 inches + labled Peruvian apple snail. I'm not sure what these are.
Havent been able to track down a scientiffic name on google for "Peruvian apple snail" They are mostly dark brown with some lighter brown bands. They are the biggest snails I've ever seen in a fish store.

I just noticed that you are from Canada so what you have available there is probably different than what we have here. I have a feeling that snails that come from Peru would not be a problem in Canada's colder waters, compared to where I live in Florida. Alison:;sman

The Latin name for the Peruvian apple snail also known as the giant apple snail is Pomacea Maculata. Had to look it up. Happy snailing

Yes it seems like all the fun things survive rather well in Florida and have a habit of taking over. I woul feel right at home in that climate myself. Thank you
