20 Gallon Tank Apisto vejieta

Does anyone have any experience with these apistos? I am close to being able to stock my 20 high and was going to do tiger barbs, but it seems the 20 may be too small for barbs so my next option was apistogramma.

My lfs only sells 2 kinds of apisto so I went with the vejieta.

Can anyone help with these? Like how many should I get and tank mates etc...

Get a pair or 1m/3f. These aren't one of the harder apistos so they should be pretty easy. Tankmates, lots of options. Tetras, Rasboras, cories

Do the females get the nice red color that the males get?

I do not know 100% but female vejieta do get some red coloration like the males. Just not as much

Paradise gourami are great options, but they need to be kept alone or in a harem. They don't need heaters

Personally I’d go with the Apistos. I love paradise fish, but I think the Apistogramma will be more entertaining and possibly give you some babies

Awesome, I think I'll go with the apistos, maybe just a pair. I don't know how to sex them so hopefully my lfs can do that for me.

What's a good school fish for them? Cardinals okay?

I have nine of them and they seem pretty undemanding, unfortunately I have eight males and only one female, now that spring is here I will start to try and breed them.

Bear in mind that 99% of the commercially available viejita are actually macmasteri. The two are in the same Apisto complex, but the real viejita comes from an extremely remote location, while macmasterI populations are quite available in the wild, and in the hobby. If it comes from a commercial wholesaler, it's a macmasterI population.

Ita funny you say that, on the tag on the tank it actually said " these may be macmasterI as it's very hard to tell them apart " lol

Mine were pretty small when I got them, I've had them for about 6 mo. Can you post a picture of them?

If there small you probably won't be able to sex them. If what I hope are females, they don't have much color but do have some on their tails.
