Api Flakes good to feed daily?

I have some API tropical greens flakes and was wondering if this is a suitable daily food to feed guppies?

Not really, guppies are omnivores so feeding them that as a staple food wouldn’t be healthy. They still need protein. Try feeding your fish a variety of different foods. Live, Frozen, and dry foods is best. If you are going to use API’s line, use the tropical flakes.

I knew they needed protein so chose this because the bottle says it has atleast 35% protein. That wouldn't be enough ?

Animal protein is different from vegetable. If the food has fish meal in it, it's probably okay but still should not be the staple diet.

Getting technical, vegetable matter gets broken down and digested much slower than meats. That is why strictly herbivorous animals have a long and sometimes intricate digestive tract. (more than one stomach in many cases) Carnivores have a shorter digestive tract. In fish, the Betta has a system that pretty much consists of a mouth, a stomach, and an anus. Omnivorous fish, like the guppy. have a longer tract than a Betta but a much shorter tract than say an algae eater so some of the plant matter will pass through undigested.

It does have protein but they also need meaty foods or insects.

It has fish meal as well as squid meal. I compared the ingredients to the API tropical flakes and found them to be pretty identical. If this food is not healthy as a staple then what is? I've read brine shrimp and blood worms should not be daily. I've read that omega one is a good choice but found that they use a preservative that is very unhealthy.

Having those ingredients, I would say it's fine for guppies. the tropical might be slightly better but what you have seems good.

Honestly, guppies will eat anything so it doesn’t really matter. It’s just recommended that you feed a variety of different food.

live Baby brine shrimp is good as a staple food but its too much work. Bloodworms are full of fat and they have little to no nutrients to give the fish. Idk about the preservative in omega one but it’s one of the more popular fish food.

Ok thanks everyone appreciate all the info as I am new to fishkeeping. I will look into brine shrimp and bloodworms as a treat. And yes omega one seemed to be greatly recommended but it has ethoxyquin which I read about being toxic and even used as a pesticide.

In reviews and product statements, your food is actually recommended for Guppies. I wouldn't worry about the ethoxyquin. All pet foods are required by law to contain some kind of preservative. Omega One is excellent food. I can tell you this too. Tetra products get a bad rap from many but their TetraMin Tropical flakes are actually pretty good. Their Betta pellets on the other hand are terrible.

Well that's a relief. The bottle is quite big and I was thinking it was going to go to waste haha. Oh really? Yeah I had heard tetra food was a bunch of filler but that's good to know since tetra products are easily accessible. Thanks for the help.

If you can find it, I would recommend Fluval Bug Bites Tropical formula. It is an excellent food that contains insects as the main ingredient. You could feed it as a treat a couple of times a week. Most fish go crazy over it.

Yeah, some Tetra stuff is okay, some not so much. You have to check the ingredients list. For example, their Betta pellets list wheat as the FIRST ingredient. Really? For a carnivorous fish like a Betta? The TetraMin flakes are much better and my Betta gets them a few times a week.

I looked them up on amazon and it appears that only their bottom feeder formula is prime, the other one is only an add on item so I will see if I can find it in store.

I got mine by contacting them and asking for a free sample. They sent me a small package of the Tropical formula which will last me a long time with only one Betta to feed.

Aquariumcoop, petmountain, and flipaquatics carry them but shipping charges are $5 at aquariumcoop to $7.95 at petmountain.
