I'm getting a super high ammonia reading on my 40L planted freshwater. Nitrites and nitrate are normal. fish are fine water is clear. doesn't seem right. Any ideas?

How long has the tank been cycled? What do you mean by normal nitrites and nitrates?. Was your ammonia at 0 before?
My ammonia is 0ppm out of the tap. My nitrite and nitrate is 0ppm in the tank. my ammonia level is2.0ppm in the tank. I started the tank 12 days ago. do you think it isn't cycled yet?

Definitely not cycled yet. You want your ammonia to be 0, nitrites 0, and a nitrate reading above zero to know that your tank is cycled.

Nope, it is not cycled... You are at the very beginning now - usually it takes from 4 to 6 weeks if everything goes well.

Do you have fish in the tank? Or just the plants?

40L is around 10 gallon. how many fish are in it?

12 days is not long enough to cycle. unless you're using seeded media.
