Me - Background

I started fitness about 2 years ago. In this time I have lost 24 pounds and want to get physically fit. Mind you, I am NOT a gym rat but I do try and go 3 to 4 days a week. I am close to my goal but want more......
Some of the classes I enjoy are:

Bootcamp type of classes, step aerobics and cardio fitness with weights.
I mostly enjoy classes with weight because it kills 2 birds with one stone, so to speak.

I HAVE tried Yoga/pilates but I get really BORED of it and find myself yawning during class..... AM I missing something??? Our gym has a Vinyasa yoga tomorrow and I want to try it but I am NOT motivated to go... Most of the Yoga and Pilates I have done seem so boring.....

TELL me the benefits --- I hear its good for core, strength ( which is what I want ) but how do I get through something that literally puts me to sleep?????? Any one else like this???

Thanks!

I've found that as with all forms of exercise, some things are enjoyable and some are not. Pick things you enjoy doing and you will have more success at whatever it is you are trying to achieve.

I do Bikram Yoga. This is the kind that is in 100 degree heat and 40% humidity. I thought I'd hate it and the first session was torture. But the second was way better and now I love it.

The benefits of Yoga are mainly centered around stretching/flexibility and balance.

I'd try it a few more times and then if you don't like it, move on to something else. I tried running and kickboxing and I just couldn't get into it no matter how hard I tried.

Anyways grats on the weight loss!!! Going to the gym 3-5 times per week is great. I'm sure your body is loving you

Wow Bikram yoga sounds torturous!!! I never knew!!!

I actually enjoy kickboxing and jogging ( not running ) because its more fast paced and it seems like my time goes by quicker. I get bored easily with exercise ( never been athletic ) so it takes a lot for me to stay motivated.

Thanks for your input!! I will try it and see how it goes... Worst thing that can happen is I fall asleep, right? lol

I am as uncoordinated as a bee in a honeypot!!! No really, I DID try Zumba once and I think everyone was watching me and laughing because I WAS ALL OVER the floor!!!

I am not very coordinated to say the least!!! LOL

Glad you like it though...

If there is a modern dance studio with open classes I might recommend that instead of yoga I have an extensive ballet background, but my last year in college I started doing modern instead. It's a lot freer in terms of movement and also involves more weight on your arms. In the classes I've done there's always about 20 minutes to a half hour of a kind of pilates-yoga-dance core-building period, and then after that it's exercises that move across/around the floor. I don't know if you're the kind of person that wants to dance but if you're looking for something "like" yoga or pilates, but that makes you think and figure things out more, modern is a good place to start.

I WISH I had time to find a good Zumba class... I have an xbox360 kinect game that is great, I know I'd love an actual zumba class.

My Peurto Rican friends swear I have a strong inner latina.

i'm a newbie here too, so maybe i'm confused... but, is this the kind of conversation that goes on in a fish forum?

Well, yes! This thread is certainly not the most peculiar you'll come across

ok... just not what I bargained for... thought chatter about things other than fish would be done privately or in a forum designed for that subject matter...

Jwebbe, have you tried the "athletic"/"sports" Pilates? I did it a few times and it was nice and a challenge. It included weight workouts too. I'm not a Yoga person, I prefer to be moving (I learned that I don't do well on my back either) but this was fine for me.

Look, my exercise routine (in addition to karate, softball, & Jujitsu) involves pushups, crunches, sprinting, jumping "stuff", and chasing around little kids.

Yoga? Aint nobody got time for that!

Well I am more of a kickboxing, crosstraining, step aerobics and general boot camp type of gal so I find stuff like yoga and pilates SUPER BORING!!! Everyone says its supposed to be GREAT but I just haven't got in to it yet.... Every day there's a yoga/pilates class and I just make up excuses on why I don't want to go!!! LOL
There is a power pilates class tomorrow that I MAY go to ( well see how I feel in the am )

THAT'S my schedule alright! Well okay, my SON does the Jiu Jitsu but I live vicariously through him ( we practice our chokes and holds on each other )
I do a killer arm bar and lion killer!!!

The triangle and rear naked (NOT what it would originally seem!) chokes are my specialties.

I'm still basic - you know, the Americana and such.... Are you familiar with the Gracies? I don't remember if I told you that Aiden practices under the Gracies at their studio locally here.... Royce is a frequent guest......

Mine came with a yoga ball I got for horseback riding (I figured while I wasn't in the saddle, I'd practice balance with the ball.) The dvd is actually pretty quick, none of that "breathe in, and exhale, whoooosaaaaahhhh, become one with yourself and bend" (I dunno... not my cup-o-tea) stuff, and you feel it! I should start back up actually! It's still gonna be boring in comparison I suppose, but if you want to gain better flexability and balance, I'd recommend it. Have you done Tough Mudder?

Great! I know it does give you great results - don't know if I am able to commit though to that much intensity!!! LOL
As it is, I only work out 3 maybe 4 days a week because of time constraints.... I am on maintenance right now - just had my body fat tested a few weeks ago - would like to get it down a little more

I may try it - my friend has the cd's and the spreadsheet on what it entails - looks brutal!!!!

Good luck with that!!!!

HA!
No, Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile long run with military obstacle course thrown in for kicks and giggles.

Folks from my job are doing it ... I may join in next year if I lose some weight by then. Right now, I'd die https://toughmudder.com/

Oh no way!!! Lol. I did a half marathon about 4 yrs ago and that was tough enough with NO obstacles.
