Anyone using a timer for freshwater planted tank?

Anyone using a timer for freshwater planted tank? Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have marine land 20 gal tank set with LED light. I currently have swords plants, hair grass and 2 bamboo plant.

I plan on keeping red cherry shrimps and maybe guppy frys. I read that the fry needs light to prevent spine curvature.

How long should I set timer for my tank light?
Also what brand are you using? I'm about to order one from amazon.

 

I'm using a Fluval AquaSky 24" LED, with the Fluval timer. My timer is set to 8 hours of light, with evening and morning mode (so it automatically dims). I have really basic plants though that don't require much light, such as willow moss, java fern, and Amazon swords.

I just have $5 timers from Walmart. They work perfectly for me. I would do about 8 hours of light.
