Thinking of using screen top made for reptile tank on top of fishtank. I think this would give plants full light, provide more air, and keep fish from jumping.
Other than heat loss, what would be con of this idea?

I don't see why not. It'll evaporate a lot after too, though.

Keep an eye on the screen for rust. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it.

Increased evaporation and rust is all I can think of as well. Just get one brand new and give it a couple light coats of Rustolium paint and it should be good to go.

I have a screen top for my Oscar tank but I built it myself. I framed it with heavy wood so they couldn't raise it. I actually like it alot. It's easy to feed them without disturbing them but then again they are Oscars--they never mind being disturbed when it comes to eating!!lol

other than the rust issue I don't see any problems. another option, Home Depot or Lowes carry plastic crates that can be cut down to a flat surface. I see a member of another forum using it, if I remember it looked like a nice fit when he was done with it.

I made a 3/4 inch square stock frame that fit pretty snug around the top of the tank and used black nylon window screen and stapled it to the frame. I used nylon screen so I did not have to worry about rust. I used it when I had the glass covers and light off the tank when cleaning them so as to keep fish from jumping out. Espically Hatchet fish they are jumpers.

I have had one on one of mine for a few years now, other than a little rust all is well.

Sounds perfect. Do you have pics? I'd like to investigate further. The plexiglass I've been using gets too much condensation and restricts light flow. Plus looks ugly. I loose water between weekly changes no matter what so that doesn't matter to me.
