Anyone need a laugh?

So... the Windows Tech Support... yeah, you know the ones, just called me. As I proceeded to give him the brushoff, he told me I have a "lovely voice". I told him "thank you" and said, "that's the best compliment I've had all day!" Do you know what he said next?

I love you!

Isn't that a hoot! Even when I said, "excuse me?" He repeated it. "I love you!"

Anybody else have a funny story they want to share involving these guys?

LOL! I've only ever had the information guy for the train company try to convince me I wanted to go east when I was calling about tickets to go west. Guess where he was...

As for those "tech support" people, I like to play my part and string 'em along as long as possible, pretending to be waiting for my computer to boot up and all that, before finally telling them that actually, my computer doesn't run either of the operating systems you've been asking about! I do it because every minute they're on the phone with me is a minute they're not using to scam a little old lady out of her pension

Hahahaha, my kids like to string them along too. Once they called my son, and asked him to find his windows key. My son said, "I don't have a windows key". The guy was baffled. He said, "it's down beside your space bar." My son said, "nope, it's not there! But I have a duck! Would that work?" The guy was not impressed with my son's duck key.

I don't know what kind of keyboard it is, but it really does have a duck key in place of a windows key. He wasn't lying!

I pretend to go along with them & once they start getting frustrated with me being thick & getting them to repeat everything, I say to them ' tell you what , I'll save us both time & just give you my bank details & PIN number now shall I?' The line usually goes dead then

Hahaha, well.... I think it's bluetooth, so maybe you need a second keyboard!

And you mean they never take you up on it? That's amazing! I actually thought they'd be ready with a pen! I'm going to have to try that next time!

Scam artist. We get calls from them all of the time. Sometimes they say they are from Microsoft, and sometimes they say Windows and sometimes they say "your computer support technician." Maybe it's more of a Canadian scam, but judging by the accent, the calls may not even originate from in Canada. We've always assumed they would be making their presence known in the US too, but maybe they aren't! Lucky you!

I don't know what part of Canada you're in toosie, but we get them all the time as well. It seemed that they were concentrating on the west coast especially but maybe it's the whole country. I only hear about successful scams near me.

Love the names the callers come up with for themselves because they are clearly not their own! One caller said, in a strong accent that was definitely NOT Irish, "Hello, my name is Seamus."

Thank you for clarifying, here in the US, the common ones are:

Hello, I am from Africa and a wealthy person has left you a lot of money, but I can only send you a check that over pays you by $1,000, if you could cash this large check and send me the extra $1,000, it would be appreciated....

Hello, I am from the local utility company, please pay for your past due utility bill over the phone via credit card, or we will call the police and shut down your utility.....

Hello, this is so and so law enforcement officer, you have outstanding warrants, you need to pay immediately via a gift card that you need to buy online and transfer funds into my account...

Hello, we have kidnapped so and so family member, please send money via western union for ransom...

(In this one, they spoof a friends or family members phone number of email)
Hello, this (insert name of friend or family member), please help me, I am on vacation and lost my pass port and money and need money for a plane ticket to get back to the US, please send money too am

Please watch out for the scams above.

^I get those ones by email. That kidnapping one is just evil. We seem to get "kinder, gentler" scams.

Somewhat funny story. We'd been getting fake Microsoft scam calls on a daily basis at one point, sometimes more than one call in a day, and it got to the point that when they asked for one of the residents by name whoever had answered would say, "I'm sorry, but he's dying." It was funny until the morning I said that to someone I assumed was the usual scammer but turned out to be a legitimate caller

I'm in Manitoba. Yep, you're right! Sometimes several times a day! Seamus huh! I haven't had that one, but it's been going on so long I can't remember the ones we have had.

Those are horrible scams. I take back what I said about you being lucky. I haven't gotten any like that... yet.

I've tried blocking these ones we get, but of course that doesn't seem to do much. They just computer generate a different phone number, or something, and get past the block.

I haven't gotten any by email either but I think I have pretty good spam blocking there.

That was a definite oooops. Hopefully they had a sense of humor about it.

There are a heap of scams over here in china too many to list. some of the more common ones are a pretty young girl if your a guy in beijing coming up to talk to you and then saying she likes you and wants to practice her english with you and invites you to a tea house, in the end you get stuck with a $1000 to $2000 bill which of course you don't have the cash to pay so they make you use your credit card which they then skI'm all your info off.

Another one is someone stealing your phone then calling either home or husband/wife or mum/dad ect and saying you have been in an accident and you need to send money so you can go to hospital.

then you get the old switch where you buy something from a shop and when your back is turned they shove something broken or cheaper in your bag.

And don't forget never give your menu back after you order otherwise when you have to pay they overcharge and when you pay they show you a different menu.

smee!!! What is an Aussie doing in China! It's ok, you don't have to tell me. It's none of my business.

You can't even send a menu back without getting scammed? The other stuff is down right horrible!!

Why can't the authorities clamp down on this stuff I'm hearing about in this thread. At least my scam artist said nice enough words to me, and I can have a laugh over his call. There have been other pretty tame scams over the years where grandma's are conned from their money, but I've never had to deal with anything like this stuff. Phone scams can be hard to track, but this stuff you're talking about happens in person. You'd think more could be done, wouldn't you? It's really too bad if nothing can be done.

It's a scary world when it's not even safe to go out and eat. If I have to pay 100 bucks just for a little piece of steak on my plate, I might think I'm being ripped off in the name of a more classy outing than I'm use to, but at least I know it before I order it!

Wow!

The microsoft tech is kinda played out in the states. I screen my calls because just by picking up the phone it lets the robo dialing machines know it's a legit #. I used to like to mess with these guys but then in thinking about it they probably have a special list for people that *tick* them off.

Yeah, and those are the people they keep calling. I think they are suckers for punishment. I've told them I'm going to tape the call... I've gotten excited when they call and told them I had been wanting to get a job working for them. I ask salary and benefits and if I'd have to relocate, and ask them how they got the opportunity to work for the company, what kind of education they had to have... I've scolded them as if I was their mother and told them they were naughty little boys... I've hung up on them.... but in the end, they just keep calling. Sometimes they get mad and hang up on me. The one that called my son with the duck keyboard, hung up on my son that day, after some interesting choice words about him and his duck, but they don't usually come up with anything creative in return. This last phone call was the first time and so I was a little surprised. Maybe they're learning...

I didn't use to know how the robo dialing machines worked. It's not that long ago that my oldest son told me that they dial a number to see if someone answers, and then hang up, and then a real person will call the number again after they know that someone is home. It was something like that, anyhow. Tricky little devils.

I need to get a home phone... I would LOOOVE to hear a "microsoft tech" try to scam me I would lead them along so much D': sounds so fun! My dad lives in NY and he says he gets them from time to time hes a software engineer so there was no fooling him(not that youd need to be a programmer to see passed their bad scamming from what I hear haha).

No, they aren't all that professional sounding. The one main guy that calls... in fact for a long time he was the only one that called... he says something like, "Hello, this is your Windows technical support, OK? I'm calling to let you know that there is a problem with your computer, OK? OK, I want you to find your windows key, OK?"

And of course the speed he talks and the accent adds to the whole affect. If I'm not having a bad day, it can be pretty funny. Other days it just annoys me, especially when they sometimes call up to three times in one day, or several days in a row. At least it's no longer one guy annoying me on those bad days. Now I get to hear a different voice or two from time to time. The one that says "OK" all of the time, has absolutely no sense of humor! Unfortunately, it also likely means the business is expanding. :-\

toosie Its alright you can ask why, I like to say it was a momentary lapse of reason but to be honest I love it here. I came for a holiday 11 yrs ago and have loved almost every day of it.

The best part of it is that if you catch the ones trying to scam you in person early they actually want to become your friend.

I knew a Canadian guy from Alberta that went home a while back who was a bit(a really really big huge bit) of a riod monkey and someone from the gym tried to sell him fake steroids that where caffeine pills. He caught on straight away and got into a fight with the guy. A week later this guy was calling him non stop to invite him out for dinner or drinks and not long after found out where he lived and started rocking up at his door at all hrs of the night.

Gotta love living here otherwise you'd go crazy.

I get scam calls from idk where. I can barely understand them and they always talk so fast. Like they're reading from a script or something.

They say I've won prizes and all I need to do is tell them my bank account info and address...um, NO.

When I ask what company they're from, they repeat the script. And then I get mad and yell and they hang up.

I have no patients for scammers...

You know, all of these scammers almost make me miss the days of the old prank phone calls. Many, many moons ago, we use to get prank calls from kids asking silly questions like... "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?" No matter what your answer was, they'd say... "Well, you better hurry up and let him out!" and then quickly hang up. There were other ones too but strangely enough this is the only one I can remember. Probably because it was one of the ones that made the least amount of sense to me.

As far as phone solicitors one way to help limit the number of calls is going to the website...

donotcall.gov

It is run by the FCC and is supposed to take your number off all lists for solicitors. It takes a few weeks or month to kick in, but I rarely get any unwanted calls anymore. May help, at least for the U.S. people.

I had to google to see if Canada has one too, and it appears we do! I wonder if Canadian Diabetes would quit calling me to see if I have junk they can pick up. I kind of like those calls. They make it far too easy to get rid of unwanted stuff.
