Anyone Here.....

Actually build their own tanks? As in, go buy glass or acrylic, assemble it, use it? Ive built a few smaller ones but its been a while and it was when I had a friend who worked at the glass shop and could get glass for me at cost. Would really like to build some more again but I don't have a good place to buy it. Just wondering if anyone else actually builds their own tanks?

 

I would think that take a lot of time to measure, cut and make the edges smooth so they don't cut an artery. The time and effort to do that I think people will think just got to Petco or Craigslist and get something there.

 

I have a table top wet grinder that smooths edges nicely. Its a flat, grated table top that has a shallow "pond" under it that holds water. In the middle/back of the table is a grinder sticking up through that has a glass wheel on so I lay my glass on the table and run the edge across the wheel, smoothing it out. The grinder itself is concave so it puts a convex, beveled edge on the edge of the sheet. Really nice machine. Cutting glass is pretty easy, cleaning the edges is the tough, time consuming part without a grinder. Siliconing the pieces together is simple and straight forward. Its a lot of fun looking at a fish in an aquarium you made. Id really like to make a large, acrylic tank, but its just seems like too much cost, too much work when I can buy one. Unless you have a place to get acrylic super cheap. I'm a DIY kinda guy though. I figure if I can pay someone to make it, I can make it myself.
