Anyone Diy Fish Food?

While it's not as easy or cheap as just buying ready made, I've had some ideas that I'm not aware of commercially or just bc I want to try making it.

Has anyone made their own flakes or pellets/crumbles? What did you use? How did it go?

I've made flakes & fry powder before. With a binding ingredient (starch), I added a lot of water and dehydrated it so the solids were very thin on the bottom of a shallow pan.

Commercially, they coat rollers and heat/dry it like that, but for some reason (can't remember), it didn't work out as well.

For pellets/crumbles, which I haven't made yet, I was thinking I'd use a cookie dough extruder. Or just a syringe with a custom extruder.

Thoughts?

I feed a wide variety of foods, btw, so I'm not too worried about balancing the nutrients.

Have you tried making gel food? Soft foods are beneficial for lots of fish. For my goldfish in particular, I use a variety of veggies mixed with daphnia and garlic, and bind it using gelatin. What fish are you planning to feed??

well with my food it comes out something like an ice cube and softens in the water its meant to feed cichlids so its meant for omnivores but primarily favoring meat. My fish love it and when the Jack Dempsey sees me take it out he goes to the top of the tank. So I would definetly say check out this food by aquanaut they make this amazng fish food for goldfish. I also love that you're using garlic but there is this eachem product called seachem nourish that maybe you want to try it adds missed things

My gel food is only a supplement so I do not really need Nourish. Goldfish need lots of veggies in their diet so I mix them all up in a gel food really just for convenience. Their staple diet is SakI Hikari/Omega One pellets with bloodworms weekly.

What do you mean? I don't see a DIY section except for the tank builds.

I have a whole bunch of different kinds. Right now mostly cichlids.

I've also made the jello foods. They do love them, but they get moldy within a week.

How are you storing it? It doesn't freeze and then re-gel.

Or are you using preservatives? That's more complicated than I was planning on. Also, I'm out of oil soluble preservatives.

Gel foods should stay solid below 90F. You have to treat it like raw meat. I keep a small amount refrigerated and the rest frozen. It'll last a long time frozen. The only time it's not refrigerated is in the few minutes before consumption.
