Any Reason Not To Get A Polar Aurora Canister?

Like one of these?

Looks to use the same exact motors that SunSuns use, maybe its just a rebadged SunSun, only at a cheaper price. They seem to be a little less efficient than the Eheims and Fluvals and what not, but with the cost savings up front I'd guess it would take years to actually fall behind in total cost.

Any reason not to get one of these if one needs a canister filter? Thanks.

Yes, take a look at the Biopro filters. I bought one some time ago and it performs faultlessly. I got the 2200 litre per hour with UV and my 330 litre tank has never been better.

Thank you johnbirg! I saw those get a good review in a few other places as well. How many watts does that one use? Looking for something to give me pretty good GPH-to-Watt ratios hopefully. Thanks!

The filter uses 45 watts and turns over 2200 litres per hour.

That's with the UV running. Without the UV it uses 30

Yes, it is a Sunsun HW704B...

I have this one but still in the box so can't provide own experience (bit of an impulse buy for someone who already have a large sump.......) but I have seen other reviews saying as long as you don't run your UV for long periods at a time then it is fine. If UV is on 24/7 it seems to burn through the plastic over time. Some run the UV for a few hours every weekend and then leave it off during the week.

yes, its basically a Sun Sun. Mine's a 304B clone off ebay. Had it for about 4 months, runs fine, UV worked well for a 150 gallon stock tank. the plastic is thin and can break easily though.

If it's basically a Sun Sun, I've heard that Marineland, AquaTop and Sun Sun are one company. I have an AquaTop CF500UV that urns over 525 gallons an hour. Works great so far, but I usually don't keep the UV on. Even then, the trays are quite cheap anyways.

My Sunsun 303b has been running for 9 years perfectly. Since canisters only have about $25-50 worth of parts, don't want to waste money spending hundreds. 4 star + rated on Amazon too. Polar Aurora=Sunsun.

SunSun, Aquatop, All Pond Solutions (UK), Polar Aurora and I'm sure others all come from the same main manufacturer I believe.

I should buy a batch off them straight from China and have them put my own label on them, ha !

I remember seeing a YouTube video of someone making a sleeve that slipped in the hole of the trays and the UV dropped down into the sleeve, so the UV light didnt hit the plastic baskets.

The Biopro already has the sleeve for the UV included. Just snaps in place over the bulb. I I run UV 24/7 and haven't noticed any ill effects.

I have been looking at these canister filters as well and thought it was just a rebranded sunsun. Not a bad price for either on amazon.
