Any one have Oscar in 55 gallon tank? How many you have? We got 2nd fish tank for free already invest $40 for stand.
my husband swear up and down Oscar won’t grow big in 55 tank!!!
Is that thru fish size limit by fish tank size???
He want 10 Oscars!!!
I told him the petco and Petsmart have same answer 55 tank can have only 1 Oscar and they even said Oscar should be in at least 75 gallon tank?????
So how other people have Oscar...
what size of your tank? How many they are? How many years now? What size if have pictures even better,. I saw Oscar at pet store, they are small, beautiful but expect to be up to 18”!!!!!

I had a personal experience, as a child.. where my dad put on oscar in with my gold fish. It ate the goldfish. Dad thought to add more, he ate those too.
Genius Dad added in another Oscar next. They were equal in size. He ate the Oscar.
I don't know if that's the case for all Oscars. Or just that one?

A lot of oscar people say that a lone oscar needs a 75 gallon tank to really do well...so possibly none, unfortunately. The tank would have to be in the 6 foot range to house a mated pair of oscars comfortably and absolutely gigantic to house more oscars than that single pair without the pair massacring them.

I think a good rule is 75 gallons for one and about 50 gallons for every Oscar after that. For instance a 130 could house two Oscars. That is just my opinion. Depending on the perimeter and the temperament of the individual Oscar maybe like three in a 130 but it kinda depends on the fish and how well you take care of the tank. It all depends.

Thank you. I hope my Husband will listen. I don’t want him to kill those fish indirectly.

A 55 gallon is so narrow, that they are unable to turn around with ease is such a narrow tank. They can often grow to the same length as the aquarium's width.

People are offering good advice. Perhaps get your husband to read the posts or even just google “Oscar minimum tank size”. He will spend all that money on 10 Oscars and most likely none or Perhaps one will survive - and not for long in a small tank

You’ve done well to identity the sizing issue, keep at your husband. Maybe some research about what attractive fish you can keep in a 55 may provide him with alternatives he may like?

Good luck.

If you guys upgrade to a 75 he could get one Oscar and maybe a blood parrot or something. I do understand his wanting of a oscar as I have two of them in my 130 gallon aquarium and they are super fun to keep! I wish I could get more and maybe if I didn’t have all my catfish I could but I’m not letting go of any of my big catfish as they are some of my favorites as well. I better go as my Oscars are hungry and I feel will start to get upset if I don’t feed them. Such emotional fish! There coming for me.....

(BTW tank is kinda cloudy as I just added some water. Life has kinda gotten in the way since Thursday and I haven’t been able to do water changes since Thursday so I had to fill up their tank this morning. Also don’t worry today I’m doing water changes and all of my aquariums)

He loves Oscars, he had 10 Oscars in even small tank before he met me, and he swear up and down they last in there (probably 40 gallon tank I guessed) for years.
I usually didn’t believe they last in small tank that long my husband if he wants something he will have to have it no matter what. To be honest I am super new for fish tank, when my fish died I felt horrible, very horrible . I called them my kids so I have more than 100s kids because my guppies fries +bettas +glofish danios.

I have an oscar in a 55 gallon now with three convicts. He is about 6" so I bought a 75 gallon for him and his friends. I thought he would have eaten the convicts. There were four, he ate one but the other three have been around for several months now. I did have a pleco too. It was a big bio load so I had two HOB filters and since moved to a FX4 (a whole other issue). But 55 gallon is too small for the long run. The problem is many people start with a 55 gallon and never upgrade to a bigger one. I'm working my way up to a 120 gallon but I have to keep convincing the wife!
