Any Mystery Snail tips?

Hi all! I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for raising a mystery snail. It's the one from Petsmart and it's for a 6.6 gallon tank with 5 plants, a betta and three algae eating shrimp. I was just wondering because a while ago, I had a mystery snail who only lived for three months before dying for unexplained reasons, and I really do not want that to happen again. :)

Anything smaller than a 10 for a single Mystery is really pushing it. I don't think you appreciate how much these things can poop, and how big they actually get ;) I'd suggest a Nerite snail. They seem to more hardy, as it is :)

Nerites sound great! Are they essentially the same to take care of as mystery snails?

Nerites eat algae, where Mysteries need protein in their diet, as well. Mysteries would rather eat leftover food (and then move on to your plants!) than eat algae, it seems, though mine go to town on what ever is growing in my 20 long, so they're all a bit different lol But yeah, pretty much the same :)

    Good morning,

:animal0068:I have moved your thread from Freshwater Beginners to Freshwater Invertebrates/Snails section of the forum.

First, I would try and increase the pH level of your tank from 6.6 (stated in your Aquarium Profile Information) to over 7.0. When the pH falls below 7.0, the water is acidic and can cause snail shell erosion. Adding crushed coral into your tank or into the filter will help to increase your pH levels naturally. Please do not use chemicals to alter your pH levels as they are unstable and can lead to a pH crash resulting in fish loss.

Good catch, Ken! Didn't even look for pH lol

I still find Mysteries harder to keep alive than Nerites, and after seeing how quickly the reproduce and grow in Rogue's tank, I can certainly understand why! o.o
