Is a Air pump really needed if you have a fliter? If not, what is the purpose of the airpump?

It creates surface agitation and oxygenates the water. Is it needed, most times no. It is great in an emergency if your filter dies. Turn the airstone on while you replace the filter. Folks usually have one for the visual aesthetics it provides for us humans.

Its all depends on how many fish you have and the size of ur tank. With large tank and fair few fish in there breaking surface of water with filter outlet it might not be enough and airpump is needed to asure you have enough oxigen in the water

Its also good to have one to break up the surface if you get an oily film
