Any idea what this is?

    Saw this on my sponge filter today..
    Does anyone know what this could be?

    Is there algae growing on the surface of the sponge? Looks to me like air bubbles trapped under an algae mat.

    There is. It's smooth, black and slimy. The bubbles were forming under the algae somehow... :/
