Anubias Poisonous to House Pets?

Good morning, everyone! I hope you are well!

I'm wondering if Anubias sp. are poisonous to cats or dogs at all. I had to take a kitten to the emergency vet and the only thing I can think of is that he ate some dried Anubias.

Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

Good morning! How are you?

I don't know the answer to your question but how is he?

They're in the Araceae Family which are known to be at least somewhat toxic, certainly the oxalates can be harmful to pets and a kitten would be especially vulnerable.

I'm doing well, thank you for asking! How about you?!

He's much better - I woke up Saturday morning to let the dogs out and he was sprawled on the floor, mewing in a horrible way, drooling. He had thrown up probably about ten times and had pooped on himself. I rushed him to the emergency vet and about two grand later, he's back to normal. Poor guy. I'm just glad he's better, he is a super friendly kitty and a "foster failure."

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. I guess I should dry my plants out in the garage (probably should have been a common sense decision in the first place.)

Also, Aquaphobia, would dried out plants be more toxic in any way that you know of?

Not sure about anunis but a lot of houseplants are poisonous to pets. I personally make sure all my plants are out of reach of kids and pets at all times.

I suppose it would depend on the toxin. At the very least it may have been more concentrated with the water removed. I'm no chemist though, just a former horticulturist with a decent background in identification

Do you have any pothos, or any types of lilly flowers in the house that the kitten could have gotten into. Pollen from lilly flowers are supposed to be very toxic to them , so no easter lillys or in flower arrangements allowed in my house because of the resident Miss Kitty. Alison

Nope, no lilies or pothos. Lilies happen to be my favorite flower - go figure!

I love them too. Sorry didn't mean to ruin your day.

LOL! It'd take a lot more to ruin my day today, I'm glad that Fonzy is okay and that I may have finally gotten to the bottom of his illness!

I'm glad your kitty is doing better. Can I ask for what purpose you were drying your anubias?

Thanks and sure! I dry any plant that I remove from my aquariums before I throw them away to prevent them from reaching local waterways.

That makes a lot of sense and kudos to you for thinking of it! Although I was sort of hoping there was some multI purpose use for aquarium plants like there are herbs and such. Lol.

Wow, you must have had quite a scare! Poor kitty. I'm glad he's all better. We need to see a photo now.
