Some of you may have seen my previous posts, but I'll briefly summarize for those who haven't....
Got a new 40 gallon tank and decided to do a fish-in cycle with TSS. This past Sunday I went to a highly rated fish store here in NJ and asked for advice how to stock for a cycle. The guy said no more than 9 fish and first sold me 6 baby harlequin rasboras. I then, stupidly, said I wanted 3 more - and asked for fish that would be ok not being part of a school. He sold me 2 silvertip tetras and 1 serpae tetra.
Now... let me tell you... I never heard of harlequin's before, but they are now my favorite! Serpae is chill and a bit shy. But the silvertips (1 particular) are TERRORS. SUPER territorial and aggressive, especially to the baby rasboras. So much so that over the last 48 hours they have chased the rasboras to a point where 2 have already jumped out of the tank to their demise (I guess they decided the open air is safer than the tank). I have a lid, but there is a small gap in the back and they found that gap! (I have now cut out cardboard to cover the small strip opening). So now, I'm down to 4 harlequins, 2 silvertips, and 1 serpae.
I NOW know that the silvertips and serpae are NOT supposed to be out of a school, but now it's too late. If I had known I would have never gotten them. I tried to catch the silvertips to return them because the store said they would take them back, but spent over an hour trying to catch them and gave up (also wanted to stop stressing the other fish). I will say I am so turned off by silvertips now.
So what would everyone recommend?
Will getting more silvertips calm them down or will I just end up with 6 jerk fish chasing the others to their deaths?
Reminder, I am NOT cycled yet... yes the easy answer is "up the tank to 6 rasboras, 6 silvertips, and 6 serpae" but that's 18 fish! Even if it was cycled, I would be near the max levels and couldn't get other fish (and I really wanted some cory's and plecos).
I got into fish keeping for the relaxation, but having a warzone tank has caused me to be stressed.
If this was your tank, what would YOU do?
Thanks all... I'm learning as I go... trying my best.
