Annoyed - Lps

So I went into my local pet store today, all I needed was some cuttlebone but you know, had to go look at the fish.

I’m walking around and notice they have several bettas in different community tanks, cool. One catches my eye, it was a male koi but it wasn’t a plakat, and I’ve never seen koi in any other types. So I thought that was pretty cool. That one was $35, probably not over priced for a koi but I absolutely will not spend $35 on a betta.

I do some more walking around, and every single male betta they had was $35! Okay, what?! This store literally a week or two ago had their normal $5-$10 bettas in the “death cups” (not sure who on here calls them that but thanks for your term) and now they want $35 for a normal plain jane betta?!

I’m astonished. Literally all they did was create a new display for the bettas and put airstones in the tiny tanks and moved some to community tanks. Why does that mean they need to charge $35 for a betta?

p.s. they also wanted $12.99 for a bn pleco

Those were just Koi Veiltails and the markups are insane on them.

Its going to cost them more to keep and display them in tanks as well as the loss they will take from not having other fish in the display tanks for sale.

The sad thing is after a few months when no one buys them because theyre too expensive they will start using little cups again and people will start buying them again and people will complain about how they don't care about the bettas

I honestly don’t see how it could cost them much more. The only thing they did was move some into the community tanks and the other ones are still in the same size tanks as the death cups, they all just have a air tube/stone.

Theres a few things you have to consider.

1st is how long they have to keep fish before they can sell it
2nd the cost if electricity, food and water.
3rd given the health of most fish how many die before they can be sold sold and the ones sold must also cover the ones they lose
4th the cost of the tank and equipment.
And lastly they need to make enough profit to cover all their overheads, staff salaries and have money left for themselves too.

$35 is about what I pay for my bettas, just plain halfmoons. If I want a a HMPK koi it will likely set me back $50.

The most I saw a betta sell for was $25, and they were King bettas. Even at that price I found it to be ridiculous. If I ever pay that much for one, it won’t be Betta splendens, but some wild species of betta.

Australian dollars? I think the context is different, depending on where one lives. I live in Manhattan, which is expensive, period. But betta (and fish in general) prices are still very reasonable.

$37 AUD is $27 USD.

That's still quite a bit, although I have spent over a hundred dollars on fish before (because I'm not a rational human being), just not bettas.

Tell it to my local fish store and petsmart. Only in our city are female bettas $8 and every where else they are $4. Petsmarts premium bettas nearly hitting $50. My local fish store has $40 koi bettas and fancy "giant" halfmoon for $100. I tryed petvalu but a crowntail female for $12... *Sigh*

Okay, but literally a week ago they were $5-$10 for the exact same fish. They just moved them into tanks they already had running.

Wow not a betta fan but I allways thought they were a buck apiece. $40 you’ve got to be crazy!!! Discus, zebra plecos, arowanna yeah betta no way. Most expensive fish I’ve bought was a discus about 20 years ago cost over a hundred.

Zebra plecos? L002 are only $20 at my other reasonable fish store.

There’s no way I’m paying $40 for a betta. That’s seriously crazy

Honestly, I don't think it's as bad as people who buy bettas online and have it imported from Thailand or somewhere. You're pretty much paying for the shipping cost. I also feel those are the same suppliers pet store chaines use. Jmo.

I haven’t seen a zebra pleco in around 5 years and they were going for around 50. I’m in New York think we’d see more of them. All I ever see is common and bushy nose.

OMG! Pet Supply Plus here bettas are from $8.99 up to $19.99. They're all in those sno-globe glasses, but $50 to $100? Those bettas better be pooping out gold. I'll be mining for gold through my filters!

Was thinking of getting my 12 year old a betta, but he doesn't even take care of his dang rabbit his mother bought him several years ago. I told him: His pet, his responsibility.
No Betta

I agree to a certain extent, but I feel like the bettas I see being sold online are more breeder quality, though I doubt that’s what they’re used for.

Most I’ve ever seen a betta go for is $20, which is the highest price bettas at my petco go to. My koi plakat Milkshake was 20, but completely worth it.
However my LFS sells Red Racer Nerites for 20 bucks each and due to a miscommunication I ended up buying one once.
