Tribute

Thanks for the kind words everybody. This has been a very tough pill to swallow. I have been very antisocial today as a result. But coming back on here and seeing the kind words definitely helps. I know that my friends on fishlore can understand more than anybody what I'm going through... the virtual hugs and the kind words really do help so thank you all

bizaliz3, I don't know if this is too soon to think about what happened, but is it possible that his partner started beating him up because she sensed that something wasn't right and she didn't want a sick fish near her eggs? His difficulty swimming might have attracted predators in the wild

That's a really interesting Theory! I could totally see that as a possibility. I'm just worried now about the fish that he was living with before I set up the hospital , including his wife. I hope he didn't have anything contagious for their sake.

I looked at my little timeline on my phone.... I first moved the dad on April 18th. So he was living in this condition for going on two weeks. It's weird that he lived for that long in such bad shape!

Animals are very good at hiding illness and pain since showing any vulnerability could draw the attention of predators. Quite often by the time they show signs it's well advanced.

You can always raise the temp up to 86F in that tank for a few weeks. The heat will boost immune systems and fight off any internal parasites that could be a potential cause. Like said could be internal issues due to from getting beat up. But we will never know.

I need a funeral plan.... I haven't taken care of the body yet :-( I don't want to flush him, so should I bury him or something? I need ideas cuz I want to do something more than just flushing him.... plus he's kind of big

For special small pets I and some others that I know will create a planter with attractive flowering plants and even small shrubs depending on the size of the container. Such a planting can last for years and is a beautiful memorial

So does the small pet actually go in the planter then?

Yes. Easiest way is to put a layer of potting soil in the bottom, then the deceased, then another layer of soil, arrange the plants on top of that, and fill in the spaces around the root balls with more soil!

There is one other method that I once used for a particularly special hamster but it's not for the faint of heart: I gave him a Viking funeral

Look what I found! Look at the label...exotic ANGEL plants....and it's a pothos plant....which I have seen people float in their tanks....as it grows I will be able to use trimmings in my tanks if I want....

Here it is... with his babies in the background.

And it's also right next to his eldest child...Charming...

Is he in that pot? I've never kept one of my memorial pots indoors, not sure if you'll be able to keep him there. You may need to put the pot outside for a time.

Oh really.....shows what I know....

So will this plant be ok outside for a bit? And how long is a bit?

I live in a condo so I don't have a yard or anything. When you mentioned putting it in a potted plant I was thinking house plants because I don't have outdoor plants

Oh yeah! It would happily stay outside all summer Just be sure to acclimate it slowly to outdoor life so it isn't "burned" by wind and sun. It will have been used to greenhouse living which has bright, indirect light and humid warmth. Put it out for short stints each day gradually increasing it's time outside. It's kind of like a fish that way

So as far as keeping it inside, is it the smell that you're concerned about?

Exactly. I never noticed any smell coming off my planters but they were much bigger with a lot more soil and plants. Plus they were outside but I can remember sticking my nose in the planter because I was worried there would be a noticeable smell even outside that would bother the neighbours! I never noticed anything but I don't know if it would hold true for an inside plant.

I just love the way that it looks sitting next to the two tanks with his babies but that's also in my bedroom and I don't want it stinking LOL. I don't really have any space outside other than a little concrete slab outside my patio door. So it'll just have to sit out there if I start to notice a smell!

Perhaps this is where a bit of activated charcoal would come in handy

Haha

Any idea how long it'll take his body to decompose in there? Ultimately I want this to be an indoor plant so I don't want it to spend too long as an outdoor plant.

I know absolutely nothing about plants. I've never been good with plants so hopefully this goes okay and I can keep the plant alive! I wasn't able to keep him alive at least I can keep the darn plant alive

Thanks for the great idea because I think it looks beautiful! And I've been meaning to get a pothos plant for a long time

Not really but it should be relatively quick. A few weeks at most. I would water it with aquarium water, preferably along with the stuff vacuumed from the bottom, to introduce as much live bacteria as possible into the pot. Your plant will be happier, too!
