Thanks! I bought fry food as my angel first spawned because I wanted to have it once they needed it. The fry were spawned 4 days ago, so I’m not expecting to feed them for a few days once they’re all free-swimming. The food I bought was HikarI First Bites and I’m pretty sure it’ll be fine. I just don’t know how much I should feed them.

Honestly hikarI first bites are not very healthy. I usually crush up omega 1 flakes into power, and shrimp pellets crushed up. That's what I do for my tetra fry the first week or so. Just until there big enough for baby brine shrimp.

My angelfish fry will only eat live baby brine shrimp for their first couple weeks.

Since I already bought the food, I’ll just use that. Baby brine shrimp are way too much work for just food and not pets I’d keep. And I end up getting attached to any live fish I buy anyway so I’d feel bad haha.

They are freshly hatced and the size of crumbs when they are fed to the fry. Theres no getting attached... It's actually really easy too.

Good luck! I have never succeeded in getting my angels to eat anything but freshly hatched baby brine shrimp. Hopefully you don't have that problem.

I hope I don’t have that problem because it’d take days for the baby brine shrimp to be delivered since I can’t get them locally. Well, again, I’ll just have to see how it goes.

You can try hard boiled egg yolk. Just a tiny pinch shaken in tank water and squirted back into the tank. If you use the first bites same thing. Tiny pinch 4 or 5 times a day. Some of mine ate it and some didn't. You can also buy frozen baby brine. I used I cube a day. I put a cube in a little bowl. Squirted 4 baster thingy tank water squirts into the bowl to defrost in. Then sucked up one squirt 4 times that day. I kept it in the fridge for the day.

Thank you! I’ll go to my LFS tomorrow and see if they have frozen brine shrimp, I didn’t check for that. If it’s not there, I will use the first bites. That’s really useful, thank you for telling me hoe much to feed them too.

Frozen BABY brine shrimp! The regular brine shrimp is bigger than the baby angels!

Frozen baby brine shrimp isn't as commonly carried as the regular brine shrimp. So if you see any frozen brine shrimp, make sure it's baby brine shrimp.

Oh, yeah, that’s what I meant, thanks for reminding me!

Lol yes it's hard to find. It's thinner than the other packs. Only 1 lfs has it in Phx that I know of so pick a big store or call ahead.

When I checked on the fry this morning before I left, there were only 9 on the glass and I couldn’t see any on the ground or anywhere else. When I get home later I will try to see if I can find the rest or if there are more on the glass again. Hopefully, they weren’t just eaten.

I just got home and checked on them, and I counted 11 on the glass and didn’t notice any anywhere else.

Tough to get an accurate count on fry. I have any where from 60 to 100 fry in my 29 gallon fry tank. I really have no idea, until they get bigger. In a community tank it's even harder to count them. They hide more due to the adult fish in the tank. 11 is a nice number. Congrats.

11 is doable lol. Parents or other fish may be eating them. They also fall and get whisked away by current. And consequently eaten lol. It would be very hard to keep 75 babies anyway

I agree with Cricket. 11 can be raised is a smaller tank then 80. It's probably a good thing.

Yeah, I’m also hoping that they’ll have a better chance of surviving once they become free swimming because it’ll be easier for the parents to keep track of and protect 11 instead of like 60.

Very true. The parents will keep the fry in a tight school. That won't last long, however. They will become curious and start exploring. That's when they need a grow out tank. A 29 will work for them until there ready to be re-homed.

So how long until I should move them to grow out? Will it be when they’re a few weeks old or earlier than that?

Way earlier. Within a day or 2 of them becoming free swimmers. They become curious and want to explore fast. Kids you know.lol

Personally I would move them now.

My parents were monsters. They kept free swimming fry on a leaf I kid you not! They kept sucking them up and spitting them back out on a leaf one night and the fry would just swim away. Mom and dad just kept putting them back and I thought man these guys are just high! But when I woke up the next morning their fry were chilling on that leaf like they were wigglers My parents were definitely an exception though lol. They started culling (if you know what I mean) fry that weren't obedient. The last few clutches were down to 15-30 fry in no time. But they were alone in their tank keep in mind (and still that WAY over protective ) There was no danger from tank mates as there is in your tank. They are probably right with now or sooner lol. Although I can't recall what kind of fish you have in your tank.

Thanks, we’ll have to get the tank set up today because we are going out of town this weekend (we made plans before they spawned so we couldn’t change them).
I noticed today that both of the parents have red-orange dots on their heads that weren’t there before. Does anyone know if this is just because of stress or if it’s something more serious? I tried to upload a video of it but it won’t let me, sorry.

We have an automatic feeder we’re going to use to make sure they get enough.

  • #69
Can you even use hikarI first bites in an autofeeder? Do they work with powdered food? How many times a day does it disperse food? I thought it was typically once or twice a day. Can you control how much is put into the tank each time?

I would be concerned about the water getting fouled up by a bunch of uneaten fry food though. Adult fish don't usually touch fry food....and these babies might not try it either.

I hope you tested the auto feeder. Most are a waste of money.

We tested the automatic feeder and it will work fine. It will feed them once every 12 hours but we’re going to have some family members take turns stopping by to feed them at certain times when they need food. They’ll get enough to eat.
We are going to put them in a 20G tall aquarium that we forgot we had tonight. It is almost all set up. There are 8 fry on the glass in the 29G right now. The only thing I’m worried about is how long it will take the food to sink to the ground because it is a tall and the fry could stay at/near the bottom of the tank.

Dave125g
  • #72
A 20 tall will work for 8-11 fry until there re homed. As far as the food sinking, I put a pinch under the water and let go. You don't have that option with an auto feeder.

The final count of fry is seven. I hopefully will be able to feed them today and do that myself until they eat a few times and get used to it.

About 12 hours after free swimming start feeding

Parents will feed their babies if they were still together. And show them how/what to eat. If you think they won't eat them then parents spending the weekend with them in the other tank may be good

Oh, okay. What I saw online said as soon as all of them are free-swimming.

Well all of them is likely 12 for some. Often when I go to bed at night a few have started free swimming and sometimes it's noon the next day before all of them are.

How can I tell if they are free-swimming? Right now most of them are swimming in short bursts for a few seconds and then landing back on the ground. They’re kind of hovering a little bit, too. Is this free swimming, or is it not yet?

Free swimming is free swimming. Out in the water column gliding around. If they are still hopping around on the ground they aren't free swimming yet.

Do you see yolk sacs still? Or have they depleted them?

I can’t take a photo because it doesn’t let me post them on here. Now some of them are swimming pretty high up, then after a while swimming back down to the ground. I don’t know what the egg sac looks like, but there isn’t anything stuck to them anymore that I’ve seen.
