Angelfish or rams?

I just got a new 29 gallon (have the filter for it hooked up to my established 55 until I figure out what I'll do with it) and my first thought was "What cichlid shall I get?". Shame on me, I know.

I want to try a planted tank since I never had one before. That along with tank size limits my choices on the cichlid I can get as a centerpiece. So for a low-tech planted community tank, which do you think I should go with? Angels or Rams?

I'd say Angels if you are a beginner. You can get one angel, two angels, three angels, etc.! The rams you only want 2 or 3 and are more "Advanced". Though I would go for the Rams. Get the Butterfly Ram

Shame I can't get both, eh?

I think I can try something a bit more advanced. Albeit I only have around 3 years of experience under my belt and most of that is with a betta. But I've learned a lot in that time.

I think you could do both. The rams will stay on the bottom. They aren't nippy but are pretty playful. The angels will stay towards the middle/top. German rams stay a little smaller than Bolivians, but they are a little less hardy. In a 29 gallon I'd only do 1 angel. You could probably do 2 rams (either a pair or 2 female) with the angel and a smaller schooling fish to go with them.

1 angle in a 29 or 2 rams. .....I like rams so there's my vote.

I don't know but could maybe be implying that rams require lower ph but lower ph levels soften snails shells and all that bad stuff? My best guess!

I've been doing a lot of research for my future 29 gallon and have come across some similar dilemmas with regards to rams and angels. The issue is, there is a TON of conflicting information out there regarding the minimum/ideal number of rams to keep in a tank that size. As was previously stated, you can keep 1, 2, or 3 angels in a tank that size (although it largely depends on their personality, sex, and whether or not there is a breeding pair involved). In contrast for rams (Bolivian in particular), I have seen articles claiming everything from solitary, pairs, and even large groups to be the "best" ie. most peaceful stocking number. Frankly, I don't know who to believe.

However as I am not concerned with breeding either of these fish, I have settled on a single angelfish (centerpiece) and a single Bolivian ram for my future 29 gallon (along with a small school of cories and undecided top level schooling fish). From my research, this is probably the safest stocking option to guarantee no aggression between the two species.

I think I might go with a gbr and build my tank around that. Maybe have some cories, some platies, a small mid-top schooler, and the gbr. Maybe. But I'm pretty sure I'm going for a ram.

it really depends whether you want a kind of social fish or a very puppy-like fish. if you want a fish that will really interact with you, get the angel.
