Angelfish fry journal

ayeayeron

I figured I’d stop hijacking my own cory thread and make a new one for my angelfish babies lol. Corys are chill right now and don’t seem to be in the mood to mate (perhaps it’s the cold weather) but my angelfish are a different story lol. I believe it is day 15 at this point, and I don’t have a huge spawn but I believe I have 30-40. They are starting to have little “fin buds” on their backs and tummies. I was feeding BBS, but my culture isn’t doing great and I want to get them on dry food anyway so I’ve transitioned them onto first bites and crushed up flakes. I have figured out that they are going to be silver ghosts when they grow up Below are pics of the fry and one of the parents

Will they chase after the cories?

I’m not sure! This is experimental. Because the corys are basically the same size as them right now, I don’t think they’re going to bother them at all. The angels seem to be just constantly scavenging for food.

Just wondering. I have never had multiple species of fry in the same tank together.

Me neither. I thought it would be cool to try. Obviously not efficient for breeding for profit, but my fish threw this work on me by themselves

Pair 1 is at it again  I’m getting almost 1 spawn a week now between both of my pairs. They keep laying them in spots where i can’t take the eggs out, and then they eat them...

The fry are developing well. I’m already seeing the beginning of some of their ventrals. Some have black streamlines on their dorsal that I’m assuming they will grow out of.
image.jpg
They like to play this game, where they charge headfirst into a pile of mulm and try eating everything they stir up  babies are cute.

Pair 2 spawned last night. They laid their eggs on a heater cord so I wasn’t gonna go through the work to take them out. This is the first time the eggs have made it through the night! Mommy and daddy are doing a good job! Pair 1 is hiding behind their plant as not to bother the expecting couple. Mommy is blowing air on the eggs and daddy is standing strict guard of the big scary human laying in its bed.

Pair 2 is getting REALLY mean guarding their wiggles, so I’m going to set up a little breeding tank for pair 1. It’s a 20 high which i know is small, but i really think they need some peace and quiet.

Pair 1 has been moved to their new tank. I used the sponge filter from the main tank and added bottled bacteria, so they should be safe but I’m gonna monitor the water of course. I think they’re gonna settle in well. Boyfriend was giving girlfriend some affectionate nips. They’re in loooooove. So cute.

Pair 2 are great parents. The babies are free swimming today. They are VERY protective; the male likes to attack anyone that comes close to the tank.
They sit in the middle of the fry and collect the ones closest to the front, then spit them on the back wall. They don’t love how adventurous their babies are
The kuhli loaches and the BN stay out of the way.

Pair 1’s fry are doing good too. Today is week 5 for them. They seem to have all of their fins. Cute little things!

Big update.

Pair two ate their babies. Oh well. Not sure what triggered it, but it was their first time.

Pair one laid eggs a bit back and i now have free swimming fry as of today. They have been busy ALL day trying to keep them in one spot.

My oldest batch of fry is now in the 29g (I moved my betta out) and there are nine of them. Small spawn, but that’s alright.

Does anyone know how long I can/should keep angel parents with their babies? does it matter?

Ah. The only surviving spawn I have right now is the original. It was a small spawn and I have 9 as far as I know. They are getting so big and cute though.
I had to rehome Pair 2 because it was just too much to keep up with and they weren’t doing wel together in the same tank.

In other news, it seems the angels aren’t the only ones busy. I found my first mystery snail clutch today! I was pretty sure I had two females as I’d never seen either of them mount the other, but I guess one is male (Ive had them way too long for them to be holding sperm) Still not sure which is mom, but one is gold and one is ivory. Exciting!! I’m floating the clutch in a small container inside the tank.

8 surviving fry. I added 9 originally, but one just disappeared. Well, they are developing great and look very healthy. They are super cute and don’t mind living with my corydoras lol. I love their little stripes, however I expect most will fade with time.
Forum seems to be having some trouble, so I will add pictures when I can.

Probably the last update unless my pair decides to stop eating their eggs...

The original spawn went to the LFS last week. The owners know me well from all of my visits and were impressed, and they were nice enough to give me some pagoda snails for free in return :D I’ll miss them, but I know my betta is happy to be back with his cory friends.

Pwilly07 In case you wanted to know where they went, all is good, and I hope you can find angelfish that you enjoy even more than you would have mine :)

Thanks for sharing. That's super nice of you! I'm sure I will find some others somewhere that is local to me but time will tell. If I can get the money together to buy and yours have more, I'll see definitely keep you in mine.
