Angelfish alone or school or as a pair

Hello all,

I have one angelfish in my 55 gallon tank along with other community fish for close to an year. Can the angelfish be alone forever or it needs another angelfish companion?..I don't see him/her stressed being alone, is very active and sometimes aggressive during feeding ..but would like to know if they like being in groups or pairs or will do alone in the tank.

Adding few pictures, I don't know the type of angelfish..should I get another one of the same type or any color angel would go together as a pair?

Angelfish are perfectly fine kept as a single angel. If that is your only concern I'd say just stick with the one. But if you want more, I suggest starting with only a second one. And you should never keep 3. So it would be two or four.

Angelfish can get aggressive with each other so that is something that you may experience that could get so bad that one has to be rehomed. But...You could also end up with a two that get along wonderfully. You don't know until you try.

So if you want another Angel then give it a shot. But if you're only concerned about your current Angel being lonely, you don't need to be concerned.

All freshwater angelfish are technically the same species just different color variations. An angel is an angel is an angel

So you can totally get a different color variation if you want.

Awesome thanks ! My local petsmart has different color variations but don't have the one that I have currently, so I was thinking if I should get something similar to the one that I have.. I really don't know the gender of my angel, will have to get a new one and see if they get along well

Hey, you said you should never keep 3. Why is this? I love angelfish, currently have four and I'm trying to learn as much as possible! Thank you!

Because two may pair or gang up on the third. You can have odd numbers above 3 but then there's more of a distraction and one single angel won't always be the victim.

What Aquaphobia said

Sometimes a trio can work, but more often than not it eventually becomes a problem.
