Angelfish Aggression or Mating?

I’m new to Angelfish keeping, I purchased these two Koi Angelfish a week and a half ago. They live in my 65 gallon tank and I’ve noticed them start “kissing” and the smaller one (with more orange on its head) seems to be the more dominant one in the tank. It’s the one who eats like crazy and seems to be the one who almost acts as if a body guard for the other one. They are always right by each other, but when the “kissing” and pecking and almost body slamming like behavior happens, it’s often times initiated by the smaller one. They don’t seem to be hurting each other or bothered by each other’s behavior. Also, the smaller (orange head) one definitely attacks its reflection on the sides of the tank a lot more than the other does.

I guess I’m just curious, is this behavior something I should be concerned about. Or is it normal and they are just establishing dominance or are they going to try and mate?

I have no idea what sex either one is, as I’ve been told and have read that Angelfish are pretty hard to sex.

Since I’m new to this forum, I’m not quite sure, is there a way I can add a video of this behavior? For now I’ll just attack a few photos, one being one I pulled out of the video.

Great pics & pretty Angels. My guess is you likely have two male Angels engaged in a typical Cichlid lip lock battle. Its a dominance thing.

First of all they are very nice koi. They are both mature, which means it's more difficult to get two angels to like eachother in one tank. Typically, when they lip lock and slam into eachother, that is a fighting thing, it's really hard to tell and I can't really see any breeding tubes which tells me they are not ready to spawn. It looks like maybe two males, but I really can't say until the breeding tubes are out.

I would try 4 angels over just two. I'm facing a similar issue, I need to separate my angelfish school, two females are loosing weight from breeding, but I'll move the 4 female angels into the other tank instead of just the two. They are schooling cichlids that establish hierarchy. With only two, you always have one alfa and one omega that always gets the brunt of all the aggression. At least with more, the aggression is spread out. A male and female that is spawning will separate from the school to spawn, then return to the school, so that's why a breeding pair can be kept together (just the two) for at least a little while.

I don't even see the slightest hint of a breeding tube on either ..
Aggression 99% IMO..Both males IMO also , as usually females will buddy up to fake spawn in my past experience ...

Thank you everyone! When considering adding one to two more Angels to the tank, should I look for them to be mature as well when adding them? Or would I be better off with younger one? Or would they just be picked on and killed due to them not being mature yet.

Its been my experience that newly introduced juvenile cichlids aren't picked on as much by established adult cichlids. If you decide to add other adult Angels, make sure you hand pick the best looking, more aggressive ones in the vendor's display tank. The same goes for picking juveniles. Only the mean ones. Lol.
