An LED question

I would like to grow plants in my 10 gallon shrimp tank. I have java moss so far. It has a marineland LED hood. Wish I had gotten a florescent hood like my 20 gallons. Anyway I want to add light other than the window across the room. My husband had the idea to get one of these and put it behind the tank. It sounds really odd but then again could work. With all the things I am able to keep straight, lighting in an aquarium confuses me. I know it's kind of an out there idea but thought I would ask.

well it would be an idea but I doubt those are the right light temp of light for plants to grow you would end up with the same issue as the hood.

Would be better off with

Would you have the light behind the tank on when you are not looking at it? Seems like it would be really bright through the glass.

With that light, you are definitely in the very low - low light range. Per the spec sheet of the aquarium, there is 22 .11w led's. The LED's used to grow plants/coral are in the 3-5W each range.

Question:
Can you grow live plants in the 10 Gallon
I want to get the Marineland 10 Gallon LED kit and use it for freshwater and was wondering if I could grow live plants with it set up as a freshwater tank?
Answer 1:
the only plant that I have been able to keep alive under this lighting system has been java moss. it comes in different forms but java moss will grow.
Answer 2 from Staff:
We would recommend our Double Bright or Reef Capable light to grow live plants. You should reference the specs of our LED offerings to make sure that your meeting the proper lighting needs.

Question:
Can the LED Aquarium kits grow live plants?
I'm specifically looking at the 10 gallon kit. I understand that the larger the tank, the more LEDs --> more penetrating light. I'm almost sure that the larger tanks have LEDs powerful enough to grow live plants, however, what about the 10, 20, or 29 gallon?
Answer 1:
short answer is no. other than java moss and some other low light plants they will die. my 37 gallon tank with led's has only 310ppm for lighting compared to 780ppm with a standard incandesent bulb.
Answer 2 from Staff:
The lighting in those kits are not recommended for live plants. The only light we sell that is suitable is the Reef Capable strip lights. In some case for low lying plants, you may be able to use the Double Bright. Our website has a complete list of technical specs to reference for the PAR and LUX values for all of our LED lighting.

Ya I was thinking of putting it behind the aquarium. Well that was the idea. I will be happy just growing moss on things. I got to looking though because the hood light doesn't fill the whole aquarium.

Hey, I have your same tank and problem. Curious if you found an inexpensive solution?
