10 Gallon Tank An adopted baby...

Hi guys! My first post here...

So I have a little 10g setup that is home to a lot of cherry shrimps, 2x otos and 2x nerite snails. I was then guilted into accepting some platys from a friend (long story) but actually I really like them; 3x females and 1x male. However, I have just spotted a tiny baby in the tank. He/she seems quite happy, no one bothers him and he comes to take food readily. My tank is heavily planted with epiphytes and the water is always well maintained. So my questions...

Is my heavily planted tank an appropriate setup?

Will the baby be ok?

Can I expect more babies (almost certain that’s a “yes”)?

Is there anything else I should be doing or know about with platys?

I am completely new to platys but I obviously want them to thrive and be happy! Thank you for your advice.

Your tank is very pretty. I have had some (limited) experience with baby platies that were born while the parents were in quarantine. I have lots of plants in my QT--including floating water sprite--and the babies were able to hide out sufficiently to survive to adulthood. I should think your moss would provide protection.

Everyone says platies will breed like crazy, but mine only had babies while in QT. I am in the minority here, I'm sure.

Nice little tank but since you have 3 females I feel sure you are going to be over run with fry before long. You may want to be looking into getting a much bigger tank sooner rather than later. This one will be over stocked quickly once all 3 start having babies.

Thanks for the replies guys. Really appreciate it. I have a feeling that some prolific breeding could occur... I may well have to set up a much bigger aquarium. In all fairness, I have got a plan for a new one so it may just have to have a platy family in it! The good thing is they haven’t seemed to bother my shrimp and they are still swimming freely around the aquarium. Also, I forgot to ask, what happens when different colour variants of platy breed? Do we get wonderful hybrids (wishful thinking)?

You are very welcome To answer you question I have to admit. I really don't know but I suspect you will get some interesting patterns.

I'm A HUGE platys lover so yeah I can tell you you will get some cool colors! My red spotted bred with my white wag and the sry fry are white with black spots randomly!
And yeah, I suspect you will have bout 20 new plays every month

The pics of mine that you´ve copied overhere contain a wild form of the Variatus platy. So, not a fancy strain.

Wow even the wild forms are still really pretty. I’ve definitely fallen for platys as a species. Quite often wild variants of fish species are very plain but those are lovely. A bigger tank is on the cards for me I think! My nano 10g can go back to being shrimp island
