Amount of substrate for plants

I have 15 pounds of substrate in my 10 gallon. Is that enough substrate for planting java ferns and Anubis, I know the rhizome stays above the substrate, but how much substrate should the roots have?

    Also, are plants tabs necessary?

    Thanks.

It's generally 1 pound per gallon if you want 1" depth or 2 pounds if you want 2", I think that's the way it works anyway. With plants, you'll want 2-3" of substrate. You only need root tabs for root feeders.

Those plants will not benefit from root tabs. They are mostly Column feeders :)

Thanks for the quick reply. So the tank water as is will be sufficient?

It's more the waste from the fish that will feed the plants. But there are minerals in tap water that they will use too.

Of course you'll want to use liquid fertilizers such as Seachem Flourish and Excel.

Nice. In a tank with just Anubias and Java fern, I wouldn't worry abut adding any fertilizers for them.

Wouldn't hurt to use though. All plants will appreciate the extra boost in nutrients.

Thanks to all - how far apart should the plants go?

It doesn't really matter. All my plants in my heavily planted 10 are planted next to each other. Not too far apart
