hey, i need some help............I set up a quarentine tank using a sponge filter (which was placed in my main tank for over a week) and when i did a ammonia test one week later it was dangerously high (.50 ppm).... since then i have been doing a 50% water change over the course of a couple of days and still the ammonia reads the same.......... I need to know why this is happening, because i need to add a fish to the tank soon........... i need some expert advice :)

Sometimes bacteria communities take ages to grow on a sponge. mine took 3 months but its not usualy that long. Buy some bacteria from you local shop and it will kick start a rapid growth of bacteria
