Ammonia poisoning question?

Hi everyone I got a new goldfish who was kept in crappy conditions and now has red gill flaps due to ammonia poisoning. Other than the flaps I don’t think anything else is wrong with him. He is currently in a 15 gal quarantine tank with a sponge filter, and I do daily 70% water changes along with dosing the water with melafix. I am worried the quarantine tank is not good enough for him. I have a 55 gal cycled tank with 2 other healthy goldfish in it. Should I put him in the 55 gal? I don’t wanna risk them catching something from him.

Is there anything else I can do to treat him? Maybe rubbing some hydrogen peroxide or petroleum jelly? Will the redness go away?

 

You could move him into the 55 gallon. Unless he has some disease, the other fish won't catch anything.
I hear neutralizing pH helps with it, but I am not sure.

 

I would suggest not moving him into the other tank unless you are certain that he has absolutely no diseases. if you are SURE that it is solely ammonia that he is suffering from, then it is alright to move him.

I would suggest keeping him in the 15g, until he seems to get better, which should hopefully be 1-2 weeks time

 

You can always get the API Melafix or stresscoat for him to speed along the healing. I would be careful with the water changes, as it can sometimes hurt more than help. You could steal some media from him. It sounds like you’re doing good otherwise though and I would say just continue to keep an eye on him. Good luck!

 

I would leave the goldfish in the QT a minimum of 2 weeks. There is zero reason to risk contaminating the 55g.

The large WC's are perfect and manageable with a 15g. Sure thev15g isn't optimal, but it's only temporary
