I haven't done any water changes yet. I did not boil the wood because I did not have a big enough pot but I did rinse it.

How much ammonia have you processed? Under 5 nitrates doesn't seem right if you don't have plants.
Are you shaking the #2 bottle really really well before testing? Anyway, if ammonia was processing before, then something must have killed off bacteria.

Perhaps I didn't shake it enough this time. I had between 5 and 10 ppm nitrates before the log. I guess something killed my bb but I have no idea what it could be.
