Ammonia burn?!?

elbeaumont21

Hello

Noticed this on my pearlscale last night - it wasn’t there the day before. Does it look like ammonia burn or an injury?? We have 5 gold fish in the tank and she seems to be the only one with the mark.

The problem is probably "Black Smudge". Plenty of info on line.
The most probable cause is deteriorating water conditions.

A few questions, if you please:

1. How big is the tank? Fancy Goldfish need about 20 gallons per fish when fully grown. With five fish, you need a 100 gallon tank minimum. If any of the fish are common single-tail Comets, they grow even bigger and need an even larger tank. Just because your pet store keeps dozens of goldfish in a small tank does not mean you should.

2. How big are the fish now? If the fish are much smaller than adults, they might survive in your current tank for a while, but eventually you will need the large tank.

3. Are you testing for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate abd pH? If so, what are your values? Goldfish are greedy eaters. Thus, they produce huge quantities of waste. These wastes are converted from urea to ammonia to nitrites to nitrates. While nitrates are the least toxic of these compounds, if the pH is low, the nitrates form nitric acid.

4. How often do you do water changes and what percentage of the water do you change each time? Due to the waste excreted by goldfish, changing 50% of the water on a weekly basis is necessary, especially if they are overcrowded.

5. What type of filtration do you have in the tank? Again due to the waste output of goldfish, you need a lot of filtration. The filters need to have high quality biomedia to support the nitrogen cycle. Having a single HOB filter with a replaceable cartridge will not be adequate. ,
