Ammonia Burn What To Do?

About 3 weeks ago I rescued a poor halfmoon be the from walmart. Some kids thought it would be smart to put 3 in one bowl. The one I have was the only surviver. When I got him home I placed him in a 5gal tank with fresh plants and some melefix. He's been getting partial water changes every 3 days I'm doing about 25% changes. He was pail pink when I got him he is now a flaming red. Happy as can be. But his gills are still look inflamed dark red almost black. What elts can I do to help him. We named him Chaos since he survive the chaos.

 

Get some methylene blue. It will take care of it if it’s ammonia poisoning. You can also add some predisolved aquarium salt.
Do you know you water parameters? Do you have a heater and filter?

I thought about the methylene blue but though it might stress him out even more since he's had so much happen to him. Do you think by using blue it won't stress him out

He won't let me take pictures of his gills I try and he moves everytime. His ph is at 6 his dH is 5 it's been hot here but I've been able to keep his tank at 78°.

Without knowing your ammonia levels, I have no way of knowing exactly what’s wrong. The mblue won’t stress him out if it’s ammonia poisoning, it may save his life.
