Amazon Sword Won't Grow Up

Is it an Amazon sword? Do you have pics of it? Sometimes trimming the outer slightly faded leaves will promote new growth. How tall do you want it? If it gets too close to the top of the tank there is a chance of it melting from the higher lights.

That's a good idea. Trimming it to promote new growth.

Yes, hold on a sec, I do trim it occasionally, Taller than it is (not too tall but tall enough to cover most of the heater.

Try planting it more forward, it may not be growing tall because there will be less light closer up top in a corner so it grows dense and lower to maximize the light it receives.

I think the center of the tank is where it will get the most light so try to position it around that area.

Take that big grenade looking thing out of your tank and plant it right in the center. It'll give you a lot more room for other stem plants. Vals don't have to be your only option. Bacopa is a great stem plant that will fly to the surface under decent lighting.

I'm not. My dad made it for me. It has special meaning to me.

I know but I was going for a Amazonian biotope tank.

I have some that I got for free.

I have some Echinodorus BleherI in my 40 breeder. It has stayed relatively short, (about 4-6 inches) for about a month. If I’m correct, (which I probably am not) the bleherI type stays on the shorter side of the Echinodorus “spectrum”

Does that mean that it grew taller after that time?

It was growing pretty tall at my LFS (10-12)

No, it means that I haven’t measured the plant, and that I am only eyeballing how tall it is. The only growth I’ve seen on mine are a couple of new leaves and a runner hare and there.

As I said, I may be wrong, but mine haven’t grown taller at all.

TL;DR my swords aren't growing and I have ferts please help

So I got a few swords at the same time as my rotala coins and anubias. I added a couple of flourish tabs around the areas where they're planted. My rotala coins are doing excellent, my java fern (although not planted) has a new leaf! and my anubias show no change (typical) in the past couple weeks since I've owned them (maybe 3 weeks?).

Only my swords are having trouble. I got a four in my pack and when they arrived one was huge already with three large leaves on it, fully intact. The other three were smaller with two leaves each, and the leaves were brown on the tops and the website told me to use scissors to cut off the brown parts and plant normally. (cut the leaf in half, not at the base of the stem). My biggest one has grown three new leaves but they aren't very tall/large, they seem to have shunted growth. They are green and look like the other larger leaves; just small. They haven't really grown at all in a week. The other two haven't grown any new leaves and the old ones are kind of just slowly dying. One grew a tiny small new leaf that immediately died.

A lot of the time when you buy plants they have to convert from being grown immersed to submersed. Majority of the time all the growth you get with the plant will die/melt back. Once all the old growth is gone the plants take off. There are some exceptions for certain plants.

So even after a month you think just wait longer and they should eventually grow? Just unsure how long to wait

Do the sword leaves look like this?

Yep that is immersed growth. When plants are grown commercially they are grown out of water because they grow faster. Make sure you can see the base of the sword(see photo). Do you have a picture of the sword with new growth?

I tried REALLY hard to keep the base open, but they came with no roots at all so I had to keep them in the soil somehow. This is the shallowest I could get them all without them regularly floating out.

The two that are not doing as well as I would trim the brown off a bit more. The one that has new leaves I would cut the big old leaves off at the base once they start to yellow or go brown.

Hopefully the two that have no new growth have some roots and you see new leaves soon.

Hopefully! If they don’t end up growing and both old leaves die.... do I just have to call it quits with them? Can they grow if they have no leaves left?

You should see new growth but If the leaves completely die off lightly pull up on the base to see if there is roots. If there is roots let them be
