Am i in the wrong here?

So today I went to petsmart to get some rainbow fish to add to my 60 gallon which has a juvenile firemouth and krib in it. I asked for 6 Australians which were decent size maybe 3 inches or so and the girl says what kind of fish do you have, I said cichlids. Right away she goes you cannot put these fish in with them! She didn't even ask what kinds of cichlids I had or how many or what tank size. I said there a good dither fish and she says a what?I explained what a dither was and she liked at like and goes I've never herd this before like I was stupid or something. She says well I'm not gonna garuntee anything because I think they will be killed. As she was netting some out for me I was telling my girlfriend these fish get around 4 inches and she spins around fast and says no they get 8 inches. I was like whatever and just stayed quiet then she wrote on the bag void return assuming they would be dead before there warranty was up. Am I missing something or is she completely in the wrong here. I have a half a notion to contact her manager.

She was totally stuck up about it too lol. When she said they grow to 8 inches I almost laughed in her face. The people in front of me had a cart with a ten gallon tank and some supplies then they went and bought 3 Angels a two tiger barbs and a big eel. It was obvious they were buying them for that tank and she didn't say a word to them about the tank needing cycled and there not a good fit for it. I just wanted to vent my anger for uneducated employees trying to talk down to me lol I'm sorry.

Yeah, it's annoying. I've been there..... and they say you can't add more than 3 fish at once.... I added 6 black neon tetras at once. They thought it was too much..... not really........

Yeah, they are just following employee rules, albeit they are wrong, but still they are doing it cuz they are told to...
they have pulled stunts like that on me and I just say ok fine I will put them in a different tank haha what do they know, also the warranty is only good if fish die without signs of disease or wounds so she is a dumb employee

I find all of the petsmart/petco moron stories odd. I must be lucky because I have 5 of them in my area and all have smart 20 plus year fish keepers running the fish departments.
FyI I'm not disbelieving you, just think I'm lucky.

You are lucky.

We have some chains in the UK that are just the same. In their eyes, someone who has kept fish for a year or two is very experienced, and with the right brainwa... sorry, with in-store training, would make a good knowledgeable member of staff. No offence to any newbies here, but lol.

They always insist they're right, or, when they realise that won't work, the conversation abruptly ends.

If I was her, and I recognised a customer as very knowledgeable, I would try to quiz them for my own personal gain of knowledge, or get their phone number maybe. Go and see their fish.... Then again, I had (and still have) 'the passion'. To most of 'them'* it's just a job.

* I apologize for tarring a lot of innocent people with a huge brush. I don't mean to. It's bed time, brain's in saver mode, and I needed to keep it short and quick.

We need to support the good lfs's. Difficult in the age of Amazon and eBay.....
