Am I feeding the right amount?

Hello, I just want to know if I am feeding the correct amount of food to my fish, I worry I might be overfeeding. I feed my 5 guppies and 1 molly a pinch of flakes once a day, which I am not worried about, I think it is a good amount. I am more worried that I am putting too many wafers in for my mystery snail and dwarf corydoras. I usually put either 1 or half of an hikari algae wafer in every night for my snail, is this okay. I currently have 4 dwarf corydoras, but am planning on getting more soon. I drop about 5 of the hikari sinking wafers( not the algae ones) for them every night, is that too much? What do you guys recommend?

Corydoras are meat eaters. You should feed them sinking shrimp pellets, not algae wafers. They also LOVE bloodworms and brine shrimp. As for the algae wafers, the snails don’t really need them. They’ll eat the algae naturally in the tank. If you want to supplement their diet, you can add wafers but they really like cucumber and spinach and other calcium-high veggies (blanched). Remove any uneaten veggie after 12 hours.

Sorry I should have been more clear, the wafers that I give the cories aren’t algae, they are made for cories and other bottom feeders. And thank you!

I like to sink some flake food, just take a small plastic cup and lid, put in tank water and food, and invert to sink the food. My cories and rainbow shark like that. I also use bottom feeder wafers for cories, but mine aren't too interested in them so my angels usually eat them.

Same for me, I can never get my Cory's and loaches to eat the sinking pellets or wafers I give them. My Angel's and gbrs just devour them even when I try feeding them their own food at the same time to distract them.

I think your probably feeding a good amount, is it those really tiny wafer in the orange package that your talking about? If so the amount of corydoras You have may not need quite that much food but considering other fish tend to like to pick at those wafers it’s probably a good amount your feeding. Also although corydoras need mainly meaty food, algae wafers fo have fish meal in them so I do offer my corys one of them every so often to give them some variety. You can look at you fishes bellies to see if they are an ok weight. You want the bellies to be convex not concave

curios - what kind of loaches do you have that are not interested in wafers? and did you try feeding them at night?

I also feed the bottom feeders slow to disolve pellets and things like cucumber that they will go after for hours. and the top dwellers can never eat it all.

You can see if you are feeding the right amount by the body appearance of your fish.

It's not so much they arent Interested, it's more my other fish attack the wafers immediately. And I have kuhli loaches and clown loaches. When I feed at night I'll still see my Angel's etc. Go for them but I think the loaches get more then when I feed in the daytime.

Usually now I'll just sink flake and pellet food into a specific corner and the Cory's and loaches all gather to eat. It's so cute to watch

I would say you're feeding the right amount if there isn't any left the next day when you go to feed again, and the fish don't look bloated or puffed up. If there is food left or they look bloated, then cut back for a week, repeating untill they no longer look bloated, and/or there isn't any food left.

I've seen a quote before, and I'm sure I'll see it again, hungry fish are healthy fish, even if they think they need to eat all the food you've got in one go.

5 sinking hikari wafers for 4 dwarf corys is alot. I would say you really don't need that many. I feed one wafer to 10 dwarf cories once every two days, and that's all they needed.

Try cutting the the portion down and I bet you will not get any adverse results. Try 3 wafers, then maybe 2, and subsequently 1 or less. Obviously, visually check on your fishes to make sure they are healthy with normal bellies, and adjust accordingly.

You are probably feeding a good amount. As long as your non-bottom dwelling fish aren't constantly searching the bottom for food, they are probably well fed. As for the corydoras, I always fed mine cory specific foods (as you have mentioned) and they did great. However maybe feed them a tad bit less (the corydoras) and see how they do. The snails usually can fend for themselves by eating algae in the tank, so maybe cut down on feeding them. I haven't specifically fed a snail my whole life and they have done well for years.
