Am I accomplishing anything with this moss

I got some java moss from my friend. Problem is, she has a huge mini snail infestation. I obviously don't want any snails in my tank, so I've been trying to get them out. I first put the java moss in a bowl with some lettuce, and eventually, some snails came out. I euthanised the snails, but I'm worried some eggs might remain. Sadly, I don't have any non-scented bleach at my disposal so I put the moss in an old 2.5 gallon tank with a pump and a sponge. (image below) Is this accomplishing anything? I'm sorta just hoping A) the moss grows a bit while quarantined or B) the snails leave and die? I don't really know what I'm supposed to do with these things. I have a 10 gallon tank with a school of ember tetras and 2 African dwarf frogs. The male frog is very loud at night. Anyway, would a snail outbreak be the worst? Is there anything you recommend to get rid of snails? Would assassin snails be ok with the frogs? This thread is kinda a mess but all responses are appreciated

You could put the assassin in the empty 2.5 gallon with the moss.

Not sure why you would "massacre" the snails? Couldn't u just give them back to your friend? Hope your tank becomes overrun with them

Unless you just really don't want snails I wouldn't worry about it. If you don't over feed your frog it's unlikely that the population will get out of control.

You could put the assassin snail in the 2.5 with the moss. No snails then

Leave the moss floating in anything for a while, then remove any you see. It will take a while, they feel safe in the thick of the moss and won't all come out right away. And they can be RIDICULOUSLY small. The smallest speck can be a snail, smaller than a grain of sand. They won't reproduce until they are about the size of an m&m so make sure to remove any before they are that big. I experimented with a single bladder snail so I could understand it's reproduction.

Side note: they are great cleaners, even clean off unwanted algae on the moss which is impossible for a larger snail.

Honestly they aren't really harmful, and the thing with overpopulating is normally when you are overfeeding. Make sure the fish are cleaning up everything they are given and the frogs aren't being too messy.

The assassin will work however it will take it an extended time to hunt down all the snails. An easier thing would be potassium permanganate, it will kill off snails but not eggs (you would be doing a dose anytime you'd see snails, this has to be done as a soak not in the tank), another option would be ghost shrimp, which generally snack on egg sacks right as they are getting to hatch (specially if they don't have a lot of other foods).

They wanted the moss.
I have over 40 moss balls in 7 tanks. I also have multiple kinds of snails. Including "pest" snails. They never bother me. I love them if your tank is in balance you will only see a few helping clean up.
IF YOUR TANK IS OVERRUN with pest snails there population boom has something excessive to fees on
Ie. Too much food
Ie. Too much algae
Here is my new betta tank. Has lots of moss balls and a few snails came with one of the plants from onther tank. I enjoy the help w algae and excess .

Do your research before you just kill an animal

I'm just pointing out what they wanted, I may not agree, but they don't want the snails.

adding assassins or shrimp to control a problem is never a good idea.
Once (or even if) the assassnis do away with the "pest" snails, then what?
Shrimp to control snails by eating the eggs is just not sound advice, that is just one big "if".

my friend is also desperately trying to get rid of them. I just really don't want them poking holes in my plants when they get hungry

thank you

Massacre was definitely not the best word. I just took them out and fed them to my roommates pea puffers. Which was admit ably pretty hard to watch. I really just don't want to worry about snails in my tank and the frogs possibly messing with them.

Snails dont poke holes in plants. Who told you this? If your plants have holes different issue. Other than huge Apple snails these "pest" snails dont ear your plants. They eat algae off it. Helping.

If your friends tank is overrun im going to guess his tank is not in balance.

Agreed aside from apple snails all other “pest” snails will help with cleaning And not hurt any healthy plants

I ended up putting the moss in. I know theres most definitely snail eggs but whatever I can deal with it. You guys make it sound manageable so I guess it‘ll make an Interesting tank dynamic. I just hope the frogs don’t mess with them or maybe choke on accident but most people don’t think that’ll be an issue so I guess we’ll just have to see. Thank you for helping though
