Alternative To Carbon Insert Media

Quick question for more experienced people. I’m fairly new I’ve had my tank for about 6 weeks it’s a 44 gallon and I have a marine land 350 bio wheel filter. Would it be possible to enhance this filter at all with a different media? Also please don’t recommend I get a new one I don’t have money for that right now.

Ditch the carbon and load up on polyfiber .

1) they make empty cartridges you can buy and add your own media
But
2) cartridges are unnecessary, can just get media bags and sponges.
Quite easy to customize with the large area

You could just remove the filter inserts and fill it up with dollar store plastic pot scrubbies if money is tight.

Yeah, ditch the carbon and replace with more sponge or just filter floss

Okay cool. Now when I start to use whatever new method I choose I’m assuming I should leave the old media in at the same time for about 3 weeks? To help keep some of the benificial bacteria. I was thinking I could just cut a slit to get the carbon out and leave the rest in the tank while the new stuff builds up bacteria.

Carbon goes bad after so long. It's a good idea to use the old filter pad to seed new filter media, but cut it open and dump the old used carbon out into the trash.

Here's the usual video I post that explains everything about hot rodding a filter:
