Alternative to aquarium branded substrate

I like to find a list of different brands and types of substrate I can use in my aquariums, I’ve heard sand blasting sand but I’m concerned if it’s cleaned with chemicals or something. Pool filter sand is great but being in Canada its really only out seasonally. Children’s play sand is good but it’s really dirty and I’m not keen on the colour. So any recommendations would be really appreciated. Maybe a gardening soil or something? ‍♀️ Surprise me fish peeps

 

I use black diamond coal slag and have had no problems. I mixed it with some white substrate that’s the same size and I like how it looks a little more natural. I did have to rinse it and filter it for about a day before it cleared up.

 

Welocme here! Organic soil capped with pool filter sand is an awesome substrate. Cause as most of us know once we see live plants we will want a planted tank so may as well jump the gun and use this as a substrate and get some plants while your tank kis cycling

The big box home improvement stores sell "Quikrete all purpose gravel". its natural small grain river gravel, aquarium safe & very inexpensive. You'll find it in the lawn & garden area.
