Alien Invasion

Rusty the betta is about to get some new companions. I have them in a mini-tank suspended in his big tank, and he's not freaking out but he's very much clearly going "What the...????" as he peers at them. He hopefully will stop flaring soon. If not I may be in for some hI jinks as it were.

I have 4 corydoras catfish and a golden mystery snail to add to his tank. The snail is hiding right now but the corys are clearly interested in getting into the tank. They were with platys before; they may be in for a surprise.

So wish me luck.

Definitely good luck!!! I have wondered how Raspy would do with tankmates. I know I have heard that it goes better if you put the betta in after the others have already been there but I also know others have had luck putting others in when the betta has already been established.

I'm interested to see how this turns out for you.

Oh my!!! Rusty will definitely have some adjusting to do. I would almost guarantee some hI jinks but not to the point of bloodletting. You may have hit on a very novel and useful idea with the small tank inside of the larger tank, but he is still going to show them who is boss when they invade his territory, just so you are prepared. The snail will be no trouble at all. He will bounce off of it a couple of times and decide it isn't worth it but the Cories are going to get chased. Everyone will be okay I am sure but it will be an experience that will try your patience I can promise you. (but remember we love them anyway ) Good luck and please keep us informed. I am interested to hear how it goes. I really only have experience with the introduction of Otos, so I hope that you have a different experience with the Cories.

Actually it worked like a charm. Rusty flared up for a while but then calmed right down, I think that the minI tank gave him the idea that they were not dangerous. The only time he lunged at them was when they were kind of bugging him, which they've stopped doing. Like puppies, the little rascals. The corys are trying to find a place to rest where they can all be together. I may have to add a large sheltering rock or something.

If the Cories are like my Otos they will really love a cave or some rocks. Mine actually have a little running contest with Noel to see who gets the cave. It is a game they play almost every day. Such fun! I am so surprised with the temperment he has been showing that he was so accepting. Just goes to show you that you can never tell with our little buddies.
