Algae eater that's safe with a betta?

Is there any kind of algae eater that is safe to put into a 3 gallon tank with a betta? The fish store sold me some kind of algae eating catfish, swearing up and down that it'd be fine. I put the poor little thing into the tank the day before yesterday and today I found him dead, his fins and tail gone.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Fishlore!

I'm sorry to hear about your algea eater.
It sounds like your betta didn't want company. Most Bettas are solitary fish and won't accept tank mates. A couple of possible exceptions are otos and cories, sometimes snails.
Unfortunatly, your tank isn't big enough to add any other fish.

It's very frustrating when a fish store gives incorrect advice on something like this.

Hello TC. Yes I agree some fish stores don't always give the correct or best advice. Remember, after all, they are business to make a sale. Many of us have been in the same situation over the years.

Do malaysian trumpet snails eat algae? I have a few of those in the tank. Not necessarily by choice. :)
