Hello,
I have a 10g betta tank. I want an algae eater for this tank. I thought about a snail, but I have soft water. Any thoughts of what could work with my betta?

ph 7.8
gh 7

Thanks!

I would only ever do nerites with a betta. It does depend on the betta's temperament if you want anything else (like oto or mystery snails) but nerties are typically the best option because if a betta goes trying to nip at them, they have a little trap door they can tuck themselves into to protect their antennae. It's the only thing that worked for my betta. If you have a very peaceful one you might be able to do oto or amano shrimp or mystery snails but nertites are the safest option. My betta eat shrimp, nip at antennae, and are not fish friendly; something most betta are known for.

Thank you! My original plan was to buy a nerite, but I think my water is too soft. I don't know if they would do well in my water.

Your paramters seem ok for nerites, safe bet to go with a couple of them. If it’s a concern you could add crushed coral or something else to raise the GH. As usual for shrimp and snails, provide a calcium carbonate source for them and you’ll be good :)

So is raising the GH to have enough calcium? Or am I confusing something. Thanks.

GH does mean general hardness, and that refers to how much dissolved calcium and magnesium (minerals) there are in the water, as I understand it. I think that there are other supplements/things out there that can do this, including a product called wonder shells, and Seachem puts out a product called Equilibrium, but you can also put crushed coral in a mesh bag, and put that it in the tank, like CrackerboxPalace said.

You should be able to get by with a gh of 7 for a nerite. If you start to see damage to the shells, then you can add a calcium source.

Hope this helps!

What Betta do you have ? Is it just a standard box store betta? No offence meant by the question what so ever, but some wild caught / species appreciate black/ dark water. If not then you’re safe to try a nerite or amano.

Good to know. So I guess the calcium could come directly from the diet, not just the water. Is that correct? Thanks for the info!

Thank you! Will adding it to their diet help the fact that I have low calcium levels? I hope that makes sense.

I doubt it will change your levels at all. But it will help the shrimp and there moults.
