Alder cones for shrimp

Klaudia

I found some alder cones on my walk this morning. I took some off the tree and some off the ground. I was wondering if there’s a way to treat them/wash them/boil them so they’ll be safe for my Amano shrimp? Or if I just rinse them they’ll be ok.

Boil is the safest thing to do. Not for too long though, maybe 2 mins to kill bacteria and anything it may have touched.

Easy enough, thanks

Boiling them should also release some of the tannins which can give your water a yellowish tint. They may also lower your pH. If you have a high pH to begin with there is no need to worry about that.

Killing bacteria in boiling water basically happens instantly. If all you’re looking to do is make it safe a few seconds is all you need.
