albino corey with red dots...

Hello...I have three albino pygmy cories; one has been acting dead for a few days, like it'll be lying on the bottom of the tank for hours but then will swim...today I see it has about three red dots on it's side. I know this can't be good. I don't have a quarantine tank right now (well, I do but it's full of new fish)...what could this be? and what should I do? (I'll hunt around after dinner, but thought I'd post the questions now to see if I get any suggestions...) TIA

Sorry to hear about your fish
Is there any chance you could upload a better picture?
Also, what are your water parameters?

my water is good...I dunno if I can get a pic but it's like a red rash toward the back of its side.

What is "good"?

A red rash? Hmm. Sounds like a burn from high ammonia. Have you tested your water recently?

I was wondering the same. It sounds like this tank might be experiencing some cycling woes.

Hi, sorry, I know 'good" is a silly answer. I'm at zero for ammonia and nitrites, and ten for nitrates. PH is at about 7.2. I did a 5 gallon water change yesterday and tested then too and it was the same.

HOWEVER!!! when I was thinking about the water change, I distinctly remember putting in Prime for the 14g (which is where my new, quarantined fish are) but could not remember putting it in the 34g. So, I'm wondering if that could be it (I put in some prime just now after thinking about it). That albino corey has been acting odd for a couple of days...last time one was acting like this the PH had dropped (thanks to decomposing wood), which is why I tested the water yesterday. But the red spots are new today.

Could untreated water have caused the red spots? In SF we have chloramine in the water. I have 2 other albino coreys and they seem fine...

That is probably the problem, then. You should Prime the tank water.

yep, as soon as I thought of it, I did. unfortunately, the corey died this morning. I think it was not doing very well and then that pushed it over the edge. Too bad, such an avoidable mistake. *sigh*

the remaining fesh seems fine, though. happy, swimming.

I have made stupid mistakes too. I'm glad the rest are doing great!
