Air stone making hissing noise

I have a 55 gallon tank with one air pump. The pump itself is practically silent. I was using a little air stone that was inside of an ornament. I’ve been having algae issues so I removed the ornament that this air stone was in since it collected the most algae. I put the stone back inside the tank out in the open and I noticed it was now making a hissing type of noise. It almost sounds like there’s running water in the next room.

I replaced this air stone with a long air stone wand and it’s still making that hissing noise. Again, the noise is not coming from the pump; it’s coming from the air stone itself. I never had any issues with the stones making noise when they were inside of an ornament. I didn’t change the pump or tubing setup either. The only thing that changed was the air stone being outside of an ornament.

Any ideas on what is happening?

When air is pushed through a small opening (like the pores in an airstone), a hissing noise will most likely occur. You can turn the pressure up or down until you have the least hissing. But I doubt you can turn it off completely, it's just part of it.

The hissing noise stays the same no matter what pressure it’s on.

I wonder if the hissing is “just apart of it,” considering it’s never done this before and then randomly it started happening.

That's what I said, basically. You can minimize it, but not turn it off completely.

Isn't there a leak in the hose or something ?

Sorry I wasn’t very clear in my post.

I was pointing out that it used to be quiet and now it’s not. So there was a point where there was actually total silence.

The ornament must have been containing the sound.

In my experience, air stones always make a hissing noise.

The stones erode and accumulate bacteria and biofilms over time. A fresh airstone is pretty quiet.

Very possible.
