Aggressive Platys

In my 30 gal tank, I have a Gourami, 3 platys, 5 pepper corys, and HAD 5 Serpae tetras. This morning I found one dead. I was like okay, hmmm weird. So I took him out and disposed of him, went on with my day. About 3 hours later... Another dead. And less that 5 minutes after disposing if the second one, I watch for any weird events in my tank. And BAM! My Female platy bit the face of another tetra. I took a picture and not 10 seconds later, my other female platy strikes the same fish. This time disposing if the whole face completely, Spiting it out and swimming around like nothing happened. Are Platys normally this aggressive to fish almost their size? I thought it was my gourami killing them, but nope.

 

Is the tank cycled? What are your parameters? I would rehome, return, or euthanize that platy at this rate.

Does the platy seem off in any way?

 

No, they go about their business and usually keep to them selves. All peramiters are in check.

They don't pick on any other fish, and they don't even want to put up a fight with the gourami, because ive seen them try, but he just turns around and faces them and they swim away. It could just be they are trying to show at least alittle dominance.

But the Platys did just have some babies, but there is no sign of any so I would think they were eaten.

That is likely. I do think getting rid of the platy causing the issue is your best bet.

 

How would I do that? they also just killed another tetra. I don't get it. Why the tetras when the corys are such an easier objective, they swim slower and swim at the top with the Platys.

I would euthanize it/them with clove oil. You don't want to risk the same thing happening to someone else's fish unless you send it/them to a platy only tank.

I had same thing happen a few months ago and you guys told me a platy would not do this. it killed over 8 fish before I could put it down. then got another from a different lfs and it killed all 16 of my guppies and a bn pleco. I'll never get another platy 2 in a row killing tank mates in a 75 gallon tank. my bettas(yes plural) don't kill other fish. why are platys so volatile now?
