Aggressive Platy

I have multiple 8 Platies in my 15 gallon tank, and one of the males is being very aggressive lately. He has never been aggressive before but now he seems to be fin nipping and driving everyone away. It appears to be stressing out my fish and any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Information About My Tank and Fish:

• I recently changed 20% of the tank water, so ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels are down
• I have 2 Adult Female platies, 2 Male platies, and 4 fry
• The aggressive fish is a male and he seems to be the targeting the largest female. He followers her all day and drives away every other fish, including the other female
• He and the female stay every high up, next to the waterline
• There is no sign of disease in the tank
• There is moderate algae growth
• The largest female has just given birth and is not currently pregnant

It seems that your male platy wants to breed with the female. The only way to reduce the harassment is either get more females with a ratio 1:3 or keep only one sex in the tank.

OK thanks for the info. Is there anyway to stop them from breeding at this point or is it too late?

Remove all of the females or males. Female platys can still give birth without the presence of a male.

 

Alright thanks for the advice. I’ll see where it goes and than decide whether to remove them or not.
