African Dwarf Frog Gender?

Sorry I haven't been around. I got sick.

So your frogs went through another shed, but are now all right? Or are they continuing to exhibit symptoms ?

theyre not floating or acting weird at all. the shed didn’t look like the last two times my female has shed tho, there were just pieces hanging off them everywhere. but now apparently they’re fine. I'm just going to go with it and see what happens for now on.

It's like a fungal infection in your skin or nails. The underlying layers get damaged as well as the top ones that are irritated, and so even after you stop treatment and the worst of it is healed, irregularities still show up for ages.

I suspect there will be additional weird sheds for a while.

Oh good! How many more days of treatment do you have?

babiimoore
  • #126
they’ve been done with treatment for about 11 days. I lost their brother during treatment but they’ve been doing pretty good.

that thought has been in the back of my head (; they defiantly don’t mind each others company, they’re usually right next to/on top of each other.

if they feel that good that they’re mating I think i’m finally going to scape the aquarium, its very ugly, haha.

do you think anyone on here would be interested in some frogs? I don’t want to put the work into raising them then have nowhere for them to go.

don't tempt me...... lol
my frogs' eggs were never fertile. i'm not sure how to go about getting fertile eggs out of them. I think there would be some people interested!

Just read through this thread, man that's heartbreaking, I'm so sorry you had to go through all that
That being said, if you do breed some I'd be interested in buying some off of you
Hope these guys stay healthy for you

Haven't been online recently and just came back today and read through everything that I missed. I'm sorry for everything you and your frogs have gone through but I hope that they pull through! High-quality frozen foods and clean water will definitely help. In terms of aquascaping, my little guy loves the java fern I have in the corner of my tank; not sure if you'd want to do live plants but if you do, java ferns are super easy to take care of. Also, if you do succeed in getting them to breed, I would definitely be interested in buying some of the babies

yeah I'm going to be doing some live plants. my first frogs loved their moss balls so I'm defiantly going to get some of those, they use to like to sit on a betta hammock too so ill probably do a good size anubias. I also need to invest in a cave of some sort. any input on substrate color?

I had two terra-cotta pots in my old tank for caves, one I tied an Anubis to one and the other one I tied Java moss too that they absolutely loved. It over grew pretty quick and hid the strings. I’m planning on doing something similar next time.

The thing I’m worried about with plants is cross contamination from the stores. The only lfs I know that has java moss I got the sick frogs from, and I recently bought a beautiful Anubis on driftwood for cheap from petsmart before realizing that the adfs there most likely have chytrid, and there is even more of a risk of cross contamination with them. Topfin sells some plants in tubes I’m probably going go with for that tank if I can’t find a store that doesn’t sell frogs.

Just something to think about, it would be terrible to go through all this and then just bring chytrid home on something.

I would say to do a bleach dip but somehow I kill mine every time I do this. the moss balls I was going to order online on amazon because theyre 10x cheaper then the store, and my petco has some really nice potted plants for $5. I didnt even think about cross contamination. not sure what to do about that.

I wouldn’t do moss balls from amazon, I got some thinking they were a great deal but when they came they smelled like rotten eggs, had weird spots that might have been eggs or sand, and I think at least some of them were fake if not all. I instead put them in a fishbowl and after a bit the water turned brown :/

I know the plants in the tubes go on sale for half price at some point in their shelf life but I don’t know when, but longer than a month. I got one that was on sale and then kept it in the packaging for about two months after and it still looked great when I finally opened it up.

Depends on the seller. I’ve heard great things about the ones Aquatic Arts ships through Amazon, so I ordered the pack 6 variety size earlier today. Though a lot of the other listings on Amazon had reviews mentioning getting fake or dead moss balls. Basically, check the reviews.

That’s the seller I bought from. I did get two extra ones in the package though.

my order from aquatic arts (same thing, 6 varied sizes, ended up getting 8 in the package) from 2 weeks ago would have been fine if not for the 100+ degree weather. if it's hot where you are, you'll probably want to wait to order. my order was the same as oodelally's order: they stank, were very hot, and had a ton of brown waste inside. I rinsed and squeezed them thoroughly because they were still pretty green, put them in a bowl of water, and they turned the water murky brown and rancid even without squeezing them.

I ordered 2 moss balls from luffy back in december and they were fine.

it can get up to 90 here, usually 80. is that too hot?

midna
  • #147
I think some places won't send live fish or plants if it's above 90, so if it's less, then you can try it out. they'll accept returns if they arrive spoiled.

apparently the highs do get above 90. hm. think should I wait?

omg I suck so much. went to petco to get some plants for my 55 gallon and I saw this lone tiny baby ADF that was so skinny and my heart couldn’t take it, I bought him.
IMG_1074.jpg
I'm obviously not going to put him with my other frogs, but should I still do the treatment as a preventative?

I would try... and feed him good.

  • #154
I would wait a few days to fatten him up. They don't seem to be too hungry when going through treatment and my little guy stressed me out the whole time because he was pretty thin to begin with.

I named him louie <3
weird how it was an instant connection, I don’t even have names for my other guys.
I have him in a 2 gallon container floating in my 10 gallon because I don't have a spare heater. hopefully hes not going through shock because he hasnt moved a muscle since I let him out of his bag.

edit: hes moving a bit now. going to try to feed some bloodworms in a couple hours

Looks so much better!

I would wait till over 3 months, just to be safe. Since you got him at the end of July you could just start the 3 months at August.

This makes me want to get more frogs!
