African Dwarf Frog disease, can someone help?

Hello,

I have had african dwarf frogs for 8 months now, and even if some have managed to escape at first, they are now in a well closed aquarium and I had some tadpoles that I raised successfully feeding them BBS.

I think the old male that I had first is getting sick, behaving strangely (staying on top, moving slowly) and shows some signs of trouble. See the pictures below.

I wonder if he has eaten a rock or something, but my floor is made of quite big rocks to avoid that. What can it be and can I do something to save him?

My setup is quite new, they were transfered 3 weeks ago but the floor is the same and no other frogs (I have something like 13) shows any of these signs.

Thank you for any advice you might have.

Can you post your water parameters, tank size and temp? Also telling us about feedings and other stock in the tank will be helpful.

Tank size is about 20 gal. My pH is at 6.8, no nitrites, 10mg nitrates, 10°Gh. Temp is set at 25°C. The temp was slighly hotter for a few weeks (26/27°C) because of the weather.

They eat frozen bloodworms and artemias exclusively I try to change each day. They don't touch any dry food.

There's only ADF in my tank, and a few snails. One died today, a neritina pulligera. I got it out before it rotten. Maybe he could have eaten a snail? I have some trumpet snails also.

What about ammonia? When you say, "and shows some signs of trouble," what do you mean? Other than his behavior, are there any physical signs you can see, like bloating or any change with his breathing?

Unfortunately I don't have the level of ammonia. But the last checks I made 3 weeks ago showed no signs of it.

In the first picture, you can see an orange spot under his belly. it's a bit bloated right at this spot. In the second picture, he also has a bloated zone on the back. It's like if something was "traversing" him, from back to belly.

Maybe I should have posted in the amphibians section, can an administrator move my post?

Hi, I've moved the thread for you.
Sorry you're having a problem with your frog, I don't keep them so can't help, maybe @ can as she keeps them.

HI welcome to FishLore!
I'm sorry your frog isn't well. His belly looks a bit misshaped. You may be right about him eating trumpet snail.
Since you've kept them for a while you know how they lunge at anything they perceive as food.
If that's what it is we can only hope he'll be able to pass it.

Can you shine a flashlight on his belly? you might be able to see if that's what it is.

Since you don't know the ammonia reading, a water change won't hurt.

I'm sorry I don't have any advice. We have several members who keep ADF's perhaps someone else wil have some ideas.

Thank you for your answer. Is it dangerous to have trumpet snails with ADF?

I change my water on sundays so that will be done today. I'm waiting for the light to go on to see if he's allright and if not I'll try to see with a flashlight "through" it.

I have never knowingly had trouble with ADF and Malaysian Trumpet Snails (or other snails) and I have kept them together for about 20 years.

Usually my old frogs lose condition becoming pale, thin and less active after 5 to 9 years of life and are eventually found dead in the tank.

However, other people have a different view as I recently found out when discussing it on here though how they know that snails killed their frogs I am unsure.

Thank you for your answer. Is it dangerous to have trumpet snails with ADF?

I've had snails in my frog tanks without issue, except when they were tadpoles and would peck at Malaysian trumpet snails.

I'm just saying that it's not beyond the realm of possibility for an ADF to accidentally swallow one.

I'm not sure my snails are Malaysian trumpet snails, because they were given to me, but they definitely look like that.

Thank you for your answers, I was afraid my whole family of frogs could be at risk. Anyway my frog is eating, maybe it's not that important and his skin was just scratched by something. The spot under his belly is getting white, maybe that's a sign of healing.

It may be because it's the oldest frog in my tank that he's not behaving the same way. I'll give you some update.

Thank for all your messages.

Everybody is OK today so I guess that was just a little accident that gave him this

Thank you all for your answers again.

My frog died yesterday.

Two white spot appeared last week on his right leg. They where right on his "knee". He spent more and more time on top of the tank, but he was still eating, that was a good sign to me.

I treated the tank with Furanol from JBL (containing nifurprinol), afraid that my whole tank might be at risk, but to no avail. My frog was still dying. After 2 days, he was unable to use his leg, and unable to reach the top of the tank. I treated him separately, but wasn't able to get things right.

He has a lot of children so I will try to take care of his descendants.

Sorry to give bad news, thanks to all who tried to help me.

I lost my ADF to what I believe was from eating pond snails. People here disagree with me but there were no other signs of disease, water parameters were perfect and she was ballooned out! I might be crazy but I won't put froggies with snails again.

I don't know if eating a snail made him less resistant and him catch some bacteria or something. That's a strange linking but I have no explanation and didn't have the bravery to perform an autopsy... No other frog seems harmed and I have still a dozen in the same tank. I hope everything will be allright for them.
