African Dwarf Frog concern.

HI all, I have a question regarding my ADF. I notice he has a few white spots on his back. Does anyone know what this is? Has anyone seen anything like this? I am hoping it is not some type of disease. He regularly eats Brine Shrimp and Bloodworms and will also eat my Mollie fry when they are present. When I did my last water change and I was sweeping the gravel, tiny pieces fell infront of him and he seemed to lunge at them and try to bite/eat them. I am hoping this is not the cause of these spots. At first I thought he was perhaps shedding but it does not seem to be shed skin. Maybe he burnt himself on the heater? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Hi, Lucy. Thank you for the reply. My Ammonia and Nitrites are 0, my Nitrates go between 40-80ppm. I am unsure if this was after a shed. Have you seen anything like this before? I had him for about 2 years and this is the first time I ever noticed him with skin discoloration. He still eats fine and is very active. I hope it is not a disease.

80 ppm nitrates is pretty high. See if you can get them down to a more reasonable 10-20ish.

Interestingly one of mine recently had a shed that lingered for longer than usual. When he finally did complete he was left with a mark like that.

I am not sure what it is or what caused it. It wasn't there before he shed. I've had him maybe 4 years?

Unfortunately That's about all I can contribute at this point.
It may not be the same issue your frog is having.

There are others who keep ADF's I'm sure they'll see this thread and comment soon

I would definitely make sure animals cannot be burned on a heater. I always use heater guards.

Frogs can sometimes get stuck behind objects such as filters and heaters. I try to minimise this.

I've noticed that when some of my ADFs reach old age 4+ some of them seem to get the fungus (I suspect chytrid but it is difficult to prove). Areas of their skin become whiteish.

I was quite worried when it first appeared but it seems to be sub-lethal and they behave normally. Most of my frogs appear to stay completely free of it.

I just did a froggy water test and nitrate was 10ppm.

Thanks all. I am doing more water changes to lower the Nitrates. He is in a 75 gallon tank with other fish. 3 bala sharks a red tail black shark, sailfin pleco, about 15 mollies and a pictus catfish. I will keep a close eye on him. I don't think he was burnt by the heater, being it has been in there since the life of the tank and I had him just as long, but I guess it is possible. I will look into chytrid, thanks again!
